How can I protect my device from the Stagefright exploit?
A potential security risk was discovered in some versions of Android and named Stagefright. Stagefright is the nickname of a potential exploit that can allow multimedia text (MMS) messages to contain and execute code without approval. Automatic updates to resolve this issue have been pushed to many devices. If your device did not receive an update, you can disable the auto retrieve feature in Google Hangouts or the Messaging App. This will prevent MMS messages from automatically downloading. Users are advised to use caution when downloading MMS message from unknown sources. Use the following steps to protect your device from Stagefright.
Disable "Auto retrieve MMS" in Hangouts
- Launch the Google Hangouts App.
- Tap the Menu icon.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap SMS.
- Scroll down and uncheck the option for Auto retrieve MMS.
Note: You may need to enable SMS before making changes for Auto retrieve MMS.
Disable MMS "auto-retrieve" in Messaging
- Launch the Messaging App.
- Tap the Menu icon.
- Select Settings.
- Tap Multimedia Message (MMS).
- Scroll down and uncheck the option for Auto Retrieve.
