What is the noise that is coming from the power supply in my desktop computer?
The power supply of your desktop computer is an electronic component from which, in some cases, sounds can be heard. For example:
- A ticking sound coming from the power supply.
- A cracking sound coming from the power supply when the power cable is connected.
What is causing the noise from a power supply
The power supply in a desktop computer can switch to burst mode. Burst mode is a technology in which the power supply intermittently switches on and off at low loads to enhance efficiency and reduce power consumption.
Especially when the load on the power supply switches from low to high, a noise might be heard.
What are the consequences of a noisy power supply
Noise coming from a power supply is not a hardware defect and is within the acoustic tolerance for the level of sound emitted by a desktop computer during regular operation.
Other than the electrical crackling, there are no negative effects for your system.
Note: Acer does as much as possible to minimize sounds that might come from the power supply in a desktop computer. Unfortunately, like any computer manufacturer, Acer cannot completely eliminate sounds coming from a power supply.
