These are all the boot screens.

Ive noticed that you have an advanced screen.

I don't know if you have a different BIOS version than I do.

Yeah. I hesitate to recommend a BIOS update due to the often irreversible risks involved. But the latest is v1.19 that must be run from the Windows environment. https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/6956?b=1

I'm not sure this will resolve the issue. If it was mine, I'd probably try another installation distro like Mint that I had more confidence in before taking the BIOS update risk. But it's not mine. So it's your call.

Thanks, Ive tried to install mint 20? But that failed to install.
(I've used Mint before, I found it to technical for my experience. That's why I opted for Lite as its supposed to be less technical and more user friendly, similar to Win10.)

First attempt had an error after file check and the set up questions.

Second attempt failed after installation, when it came to remove installation media and restart.

Yeah, I can appreciate the reluctance to update the Bios. I was hoping it was something simple that I had missed.

    Is this the correct download.

Thanks again, have a good Xmas.

Yes, that seems like the link.

I think the problem is the emmc with the 2nd drive. The installation just can't handle it. I'd probably try letting the Linux install without the option alongside Win10.  If it overwrites the emmc and still doesn't work, you can always re-load Win10.

Oh my. For the simple way would be to change the Linux disk to GPT/UEFI and add the signature file to the BIOS UEFI boot store. Have not tried but think RUFUS can do this. (3.17: "Update UEFI:NTFS to latest and remove Secure Boot notice since this version is Secure ")

Just tried with a fresh WD 500GB drive on a SATA to USB adapter. Following Rufus this is a F12 boot, Aspire running Win 11.

Thanks Padgett, I'm a not that advanced, so can you explain that in English. lol

Linux drive is in Gpt Fat32.

What is the signature file and how do I add it to the BIOS UEFI boot store.

The link https://github.com/pbatard/uefi-ntfs takes me to a list of files which one do I select.

    Thanks

OK try this, just download Rufus 3.17 or later. Select USB and  make your new disk. This is what it looks like with a 500GB WD Blue. Can choose to check bad blocks but takes much longer and I probably would not bother for a new drive. This will make the BIOS recognise the drive as above but you will have to add what to boot.

I do not know how to make simpler other than Rufus has documentation.

Do you mean the USB installation drive?

Just a note but is best to use Rufus to create a bootable UEFI disk on a UEFI/GPT device and not a legacy device.
After creationif you get a security error you may need to add the bootx64.efi from the new drive to the Bios store.
A good cloner will do this automagically.

OK. Ive updated the Bios and the options remain the same as before.

No access to change to legacy Bios or to unfreeze the ssd drive.

Ive tried again to install Linux using Rufus and Etcher with the same result.

Is there anyway to manually alter the Uefi file so that hopefully it is not over written when the system restarts.

    Thanks Andy

Yes. Two ways come to mind immediately.

    (1) As mentioned earlier, I think the problem is the emmc with the 2nd drive. The installation just can't handle it. I'd probably try letting the Linux install without the option alongside Win10.  If it overwrites the emmc and still doesn't work, you can always re-load Win10.

    (2) Unhide, modify and/or disable the hidden EFI partitions, particularly on the emmc to try to force the BIOS to look at the Grub EFI files.  This is not a straightforward walk-thru process. It'll probably require a lot of trial & error, back and forth online improvising. May yield the same result as (1) above in having to reload Win10 but after a lot more work. So if it was mine to do, I'd try (1) first.

There's three options the first is install along side win10, the second is (i cant remember) and the third is something else(custom installation).
Ive gone with option 3 so far and completed a custom installation on the 2nd drive. Creating Efi, root, swap and home on the 2nd drive.

Your recommending that I use option one and overwrite the emmc and create all the 4 partitions on the emmc.

    Thanks

Hold on!! Do you mean that you haven't tried option 1 yet? Option 1 --- installling alongside windows ---- should not overwrite the emmc. It should modify the emmc's EFI partition to add the grub bootloader that the BIOS looks at to see which system to boot. If there's no unallocated space on the emmc to load Linux, the installation will either give you an error message and fail or  it will look elsewhere for unallocated space. Hopefully the other drive. Better take a phone photo of the 'install alongside Windows' option screen if there's more explanation of what it will do.

O ok i though that option just overwrote the emmc. It will give that a try tomorrow and let you know what happens.

    Thanks

    No that didn't work either.

When I rebooted and pressed F12 there was no Grub boot loader.

That leaves option 2 Erase disk and install linux.

    What of the advanced features?

    None.
    Use LVM with installation.
Experimental: Erase disk and use ZFS.

That only leaves with option 2 the question is which of the advanced options do i choose.

    Thanks

NO!!! Don't press F12! That bypasses Grub!

If the alongside-windows installation seemed to work OK, you simply shut the machine off. Then turn it back on. Don't press any keys.

Yeah that's a no go as well.

I see a couple of options they are to clone the emmc or install a fresh copy of win10 or 11.

I could use AOMEI (https://www.ubackup.com/personal.html) to clone the emmc drive to a partition on the ssd and then delete the emmc. (Hopefully I should be able to reverse the procedure if necessary). Procedure that I will follow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZBDluCITmE

Hoping that should rule out any problem with the emmc affecting the installation.

I do have a copy of both win10 and win11, that I can install on the emmc if its the copy of win10 that has been installed that is causing the problem.

    Thanks

DURING NOT AFTER the alongside-Windows installation, did you get any hints, clues, error messages, etc that the installation wasn't proceeding properly or wasn't completed properly?

No nothing it went through with out a hitch.

I only had a problem with the mint installation but with the lite Ive not had any issues.

Seams that the grub file is either ignored or over written when the system restarts.

    Thanks

OK. Can you still boot into Win10? If yes, press WIN+R. Enter 'diskmgmt.msc'. Post a screenshot of what comes up.
