How can I troubleshoot the hardware on my Chromebook, Chromebase, or Chromebox?
The Chrome operating system includes a shell environment called Chrome Shell (CROSH). CROSH includes several diagnostic utilities that can be used on all Acer Chromebooks and Chromeboxes without enabling developer mode. Follow the steps below to lauch CROSH troubleshooting environment, then use the steps for each test to test your hardware.
Launch CROSH Diagnostics:
- Power on the Chrome device.
- Login to Chrome or select Browse as a Guest.
- Open the Chrome Browser.
- Press the Ctrl + Alt + T keys to open a CROSH terminal window.
Available Tests:
- Battery Health and Charging test:
- Hard drive/SSD storage short test:
- Hard drive/SSD storage long test:
- Memory (RAM) test:
Battery Health and Charging Test:
- Make sure the A/C adapter is plugged in.
- Type battery_test 1 in the CROSH terminal and press Enter. (Note the space between battery_test and the number 1).
- Verify the text "Battery is charging" is shown.
- If it does not show that the battery is charging the A/C adapter may be defective, the battery may be defective, or there may be a different hardware issue.
- If the Battery Health Percentage is greater than 50%, the battery is within the expected wear limits.
- If the Battery health percentage is equal to or less than 50% and the battery is less than a year old, the battery is outside expected wear limits and might need to be replaced.
- If the test results show "Battery is Unknown" the battery might need to be replaced.
Hard drive/SSD storage short test:
- Type storage_test_1 into the CROSH terminal and press Enter.
- Verify the text "Completed without error" is shown. If the text "Completed without error" is not shown and one or more "FAILING NOW" statuses are shown, the storage device may be defective.
Note: If the Chrome device features eMMC storage the test will not return any results.
Hard drive/SSD storage long test:
- Type storage_test_2 into the CROSH terminal and press Enter.
- Verify the text "Pass completed, 0 bad blocks found" is shown. Check to see if any failures or bad blocks are shown. If there are failures shown the storage device may be defective.
Note: If the Chrome device features eMMC storage the test will not return any results.
Memory (RAM) Test:
- Type memory_test in the CROSH terminal and press Enter.
- Check that the status for each test is "ok" and the final status says "Done". If a failure status or error occurs during testing one or more memory DIMMs may be defective, or there may be a different hardware issue.
