You can create a recovery USB drive or SD card to allow you to restore your Chromebook to its factory settings. Use the instructions below to make a recovery drive for your Chromebook using a Windows, Mac or Linux computer.
On a Windows computer:
To create a recovery drive in Windows, you will need to install the Google Chrome web browser. With the Chrome browser installed, please follow the steps below:
- Open the Chrome browser and visit https://chrome.google.com/webstore.
- In the search bar located to the top left, type chromebook recovery.
- Locate the Chromebook Recovery Utility, then click Free to the right.
- Click Add.
- Click the new App Launcher that was added to your taskbar.
- Click the Recovery app.
- After the utility is prepared, insert a 4 GB or larger USB flash drive or SD card into your computer.
- Click Get started.
- Click Select a model from a list, then select Acer and then your specific product.
- Continue following the Chromebook Recovery Utility on-screen instructions. If you are prompted to allow changes, click Yes.
On a Mac:
- Install Google Chrome.
- Open Chrome and Install the recovery app.
- Open the recovery app.
- Click Get started.
- Click Select a model from a list, or type in the model number of the Chromebook you want to recover. To find this number, look at the bottom of the error message on your Chromebook screen.
- Click Continue.
- Insert your USB flash drive or SD card into the computer.
- In the dropdown menu, choose the USB flash drive or SD card you inserted.
- Click Continue.
- Click Create now.
- When you see a message saying that your recovery media is ready, remove the USB flash drive or SD card from the computer.
On a Linux computer:
- On the Linux computer, download the Recovery Tool here: https://dl.google.com/dl/edgedl/chromeos/recovery/linux_recovery.sh
- Change the script permissions to allow execution with the following command:
$ sudo chmod 755 linux_recovery.sh
- Run the script with root privileges with the following command:
$ sudo bash linux_recovery.sh
- Follow the on-screen instructions to create recovery media.
- Continue recovering your Chromebook by following the steps above.
