Why is the battery percentage indicator of my Chromebook showing the wrong percentage?
You might run into a situation where the battery percentage indicator of your Chromebook indicates the battery is full and:
- You decide to unplug the AC adapter. But when you do so, your Chromebook powers off directly.
- You leave the AC adapter plugged in to your Chromebook. But after about 30 minutes the battery percentage indicator suddenly drops to 1%.
When the battery of your Chromebook has not been charged for a long period and the battery level drops below 3 volts, the battery becomes overdischarged. When the battery is overdischarged, the battery percentage indicator of your Chromebook will indicate an incorrect battery percentage.
Temporary solution for an overdischarged Chromebook battery
- Plug the AC adapter into your Chromebook again, or leave it plugged in if you did not remove the AC adapter from your Chromebook.
- Charge your Chromebook for about 30 minutes. You should see the battery percentage indicator switch from “Battery full” to 1%. From this moment onwards, the battery level has reached 3 volts, and your Chromebook battery is no longer overdischarged.
- Keep charging your Chromebook. The battery percentage indicator should show the correct percentage again while charging to 100%.
Permanent solution for an overdischarged Chromebook battery
Google is working on a permanent solution for the incorrect battery percentage indication due to an overdischarged battery. Once the solution is available, the solution will be implemented in an update of the ChromeOS operating system.
