What is nearby share?
Your Chromebook uses nearby share to connect and share files with other Android or Chromebook devices to make sharing files much faster and simpler. Your Chromebook does not have nearby share turned on by default, so you will need to enable it to share files with other devices.
How to turn on nearby share
- Click on the time in the bottom right of your screen and select Settings⚙.
- In the sidebar, select Connected Devices.
- Find nearby share and click on the Set Up button.
- Name your device and click on Next.
- Choose who can see your device and share files with you:
- All contacts: Anyone can see your device and share files with you.
- Some contacts: Choose which contacts can see your device and share files with you.
- Hidden: Your device is hidden unless you choose to become visible to a device attempting to share files with you.
- Click on Confirm to enable nearby share.
How to use nearby share
- Click on the Launcher icon ◯ and open Files on your Chromebook.
- Locate and right click on the file you want to share.
- When the menu pops up, click on Share.
- Select Nearby Share and wait for nearby devices to appear.
- Then select the device you want to share files with and click on Next.
- The device will receive your files when they click on Accept.
How to turn off nearby share
- Click on the time in the bottom right of your screen and select Settings⚙.
- In the sidebar, select Connected Devices.
- Turn nearby share to Off.
