Well, just to add to the fun, Adrenalin 2020 drivers just dropped,  and the lockup on sleep is the least of our problems.  AMD made a lot of features available, and I'll have to wait till I get home to my desktop to find out what they are.   Upon installing, Freesync was disabled, and on reboot, the screen went extremely dark.  Backlight adjustment did nothing, many settings either did not work or couldn't tell with the screen the way it was.  If someone has better luck, let us know.
Well, yeah, same issues except for display going dark... I worked out solution for Freesync. No luck with statick screen after sleep.
Here you go and share the love!

    I) clean install newest drivers,

II) get Custom Resollution Utility (it just adds information in system registry in for display:

CRU (Custom Resolution Utility) Tips, Tricks and Monitors OC (LCD/LED/CRT) | guru3D Forums

III) run CRU and follow the steps (if the image is too small, open it in new tab):

    freesync reenabled

-> step 7: type in refresh rate range - for this display official range is 60 - 144Hz. Then Accept and OK out of the CRU

-> step 8: restart the pc,

-> step 9: notification about freesync display connected should appear, Freesync option is now available!

    Happy to share!

P.S.: Probably new drivers just clear the information from registry about display refrash rate range...

Have you tried the above method to solve the Freesync issues ?

Just updating this thread , apparently the latest AMD Adrenaline drivers ver 20.1.4 solved the wake from sleep to Static display bug ..
    Here :  https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/573132/updating-helios-500-amd-graphics-driver#latest

    So this is good news
Did anyone else lose their ability to have free sync when installing this driver? I accidentally did a “factory reset” when I installed this driver which I assume is the problem (through the driver install). Then I uninstalled the AMD driver through windows key +I and the apps menu there.
Next I installed the windows original driver through device manager which put in the 2018 driver.
Finally I installed 20.1.4 but with the “factory reset” option disabled. Still my free sync slider is disabled and I cannot get it moved. Does anybody know how to deal with this?
Completely uninstall the graphics driver using DDU and start from the Acer driver and then onto this newer one.
I uninstalled the AMD driver through windows button + I and apps.
Then I booted into safe mode and ran DDU to remove it all.
Booted into windows and installed the Acer vga drivers.
Installed 20.1.4 and still I don’t have the free sync slider

     any other suggestions?
    You clean installed 20.1.4?

Yes I tried the CRU method in conjunction with multiple different installation ways (mainly DDU the driver, install the Acer ones, then either 20.1.4 or 20.1.3). I even tried DDU first and then 20.1.3 and then Cru. In all cases I deleted the inactive monitors and applied the Freesync method above to the active monitor

    You clean installed 20.1.4?
Do you mean the factory reset option when running 20.1.4? Or wiping all old drivers and then installing just 20.1.4?
I wiped everything and then installed just 20.1.3 and that also did not work.
Is it possible that the free sync is working when I apply it at the application level and for some reason not the global display level?
The reason I ask is I played Forza Horizon 4 and did not see any screen tearing (I told it to run free sync at the application level since the global slider said it was not available)

    That can be true.

Go here and check if your laptop GPU even supports Freesync, many don't

yeah that didn't do it either. ah well i guess i will just stick to 19.11.3. I did all my windows updates (updated .Net framework fiels) and uninstalled and re-installed the Microsoft VC++ redist stuff, also ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and SFC /SCANNOW.

Thanks so much for the help

It tries grabbing a AMD video driver from 2006 ( might be 2008, not 100%)

Once it pulls it, and installs, you get the restart message. When it reboots I get a message saying there's a freesync monitor detected, go to it, and then get the "drivers and software versions don't match" message..

    Then back to the beginning.

I think this sleep static noise problem is down to Acer mostly. They seem to have completely abandoned the PH517-61 in regards to support.

Well, I've been otherwise occupied with other things since I started this, but I couldn't agree more.  I've read reviews detailing the static from launch, had this since the day I bought mine, and this was the third thread I've found on the subject.  Acer chooses to look the other way.  If it ISN'T their problem, you'd think they'd at least publish a position.  You are indeed correct, support stopped for this laptop the day after release, without hope of any support whatsoever.  My first and last Acer product.  Love the parts, cpu and gpu rock, just sold by a company not interested in anything after the sale.

And to some others, please stop ranting about no updates, intel, etc.   If you never did any windows updates on your intel laptop, the end result is that you'd be using an insecure laptop with a boat load of security holes.  Updates are part of the industry, and every other laptop I own is up to date and has
    NO issues whatsoever.

If anyone reading this has ANY connections with Acer, Please prompt them to at least read this thread and address it if nothing else.

Well acer might have left older models fixes in order to improve the newer releases like for ex they heard the users about the h300 2027/18 heating issues that the next gen should come undervolted on stock and that's exactly what they did haven't heard any other manufacturers undervolting their devices in the bios in stock and what a great result in the end we got an amazing gaming machine not saying that benefited the older ones at all because it didn't but they took a big step into the future by listening and taking action

I have tried the drivers and FreeSync still says "Not Supported"

In both attempts to install I uninstalled Radeon Software, booted into safe mode and ran DDU

First try i simply installed the 20.2.1 directly.

Second install I used the driver from the Acer website (17.12) and then installed 20.2.1

    In both cases no FreeSync.

    Back to 19.11.3

I have filed a bug report for new drivers on the AMD website but i am not expecting great things.

I have tested the latest Radeon Pro 20Q1 driver and it can solve the sleep problem of this laptop. I tested with a couple of games as well because i wanted to see not makes glitches with them. The Games that i tried: Wolfeinstein II New colossus, Mutant year zero, Strange Brigade, Witcher 3, Metro Last Light Redux, etc. I did not see any performance problem or any texture problems. The only problem that i had with it is the Freesync that i fixed with the CRU utility that otori0rao mentioned!

what steps did you follow exactly to get this result?  I have tried the CRU and still cannot get the freesync to work following the steps. Did you start with the acer video driver 17.12?
