and yea, the only reason I did it was curiosity. Generally I'd agree on the no windows update for drivers.

Though through all the years I've not experienced anything done by windows that couldn't be undone without a little know how, sometimes a few headaches and time becomes necessary.  I've seen and heard all the horror stories, but have to be honest, it does tend to baffle me a bit the damage that does get allowed to be done.

Thanks for all the input.  Not sure what the issue is with dark screen, but I finally got past that.  Think it had something to do with automatic brightness, but it took a safe mode ddu run to cure that.  The display modding program was a big help, since somewhere along the way, my monitor driver got rearranged/deleted.  Used to have one labeled Lenovo, as someone previously mentioned.  Now, just shows standard vga type.   Was able to modify that to get freesync back, although it did take a bit of fiddling around, applying settings a couple of times and a few reboots, but finally got 2020 AND freesync working.   Now, if we can just figure out sleep, we're in.  Still wish Acer would help with this, but, oh well.  Shouldn't have to jump through this many hoops just to get the graphics straight.

There is a new Adrenaline 2020 drivers released today , ver 19.12.3.   Have someone tested the resume to sleep mode ?

Hello. I Registered here to say thank you for this guide. I was close to throwing in the towel on this machine because adaptive sync is really one of the best features of the last decade, and I was gutted when the latest Adrenaline 2020 drivers broke it. Thankfully, I found this post!

The only thing that remains broken is waking up from sleep resulting in a colorful static display. I already contacted AMD about this multiple times, and a user on another forum (notebookreview,) was told by AMD the issue would be addressed in a driver update, but that never materialized. My workaround is to go into power options in the Control Panel and change the power, sleep, and lid options from "sleep" to "hibernate." Type "lid" in the start menu and choose "change what closing lid does." In the "When I press the sleep button," and "When I close the lid," sections, choose "Hibernate" from the drop down menus, and do it for both "On battery," and "Plugged in." You may also want to remove sleep from the start menu, so click "Change settings that are currently unavailable," at top and uncheck "Sleep," and check 'Hibernate," from the Shutdown settings. Now save changes and exit. I know it's not optimal, but I think it's the best we have for now. Silver lining is Hibernate should be much faster than it used to be back in the day thanks to SSD's.

With all that said, it's ridiculous that we even have to come up with these workarounds. I don't know who to blame: Acer for seemingly dropping support not even a year after release, or AMD who's drivers break things and they don't bother fixing them. Either way, unless these issues get squared away, this will probably be the last Acer and AMD based laptop I buy. It's a real shame because this machine is an absolute unit otherwise. 8 Core Ryzen 2700 CPU and a Vega 56 GPU with excellent cooling that prevents any sort of thermal throttling you get on other similarly powerful laptops. It's too bad this beast is marred abysmal support from both parties.

Why would it be your last Acer laptop? I can understand about AMD's driver woes but here on Intel PCs, everything is working perfectly (My G3-572 is from 2017).

I'm also still using 19.5.2 and not updating anything in fear of breaking something. Right now it all works good except sleep. Using hibernate instead.

But first the non-existent CPU upgrade support and now this. This machine deserves better support than this, which will also be a big factor when i change machine in the future.

Sleep is broken for you in 19.5.2? That's weird, because from what I can tell that was the last known driver besides the stock ones where sleep and freesync work fine. Anything beyond that breaks sleep and the latest ones (I forgot which version the breakage starts at,) break freesync. Did you update at some point and roll back to 19.5.2, or did you never upgrade beyond that? If it's the former, try wiping your drivers and installing the factory 17.12 drivers from the Acer support website. Then install the 19.5.2 drivers over them. Everything worked fine for me on 19.5.2, and I consider them the last "safe" drivers to install besides stock. Beyond that is where the trouble starts.

As for upgrading to Ryzen 2nd gen, it would have been nice. Obviously all it would take is a bios update due to AM2+ hardware compatibility, but honestly, I was never counting on Acer to do this. My feeling is pre-built PC OEM's are skittish on providing support for anything beyond the stock hardware setup they sold you. Hell, I was reading complaints on the DELL forums that customer support refused to look at somebody's Alienware PC because he swapped some of the stock components out, which is ridiculous considering how much those things cost. I was never expecting Acer to update the bios to allow us to drop in a CPU they never intended for this laptop, even if it's totally within their power to do so and would probably work fine.

As neowave already mentioned, 19.5.2 drivers work fine with both sleep/display and Freesync.
If you don't have Freesync, what you need to do is wipe current drivers, then clean install Acer's original AMD drivers and then Express Install the latest drivers (or 19.5.2.) on top of those. That should preserve Freesync functionality.

I'm thinking this sleep static noise problem is down to Acer mostly.
They seem to have completely abandoned the PH517-61 in regards to support.
Acer should really step up and release a BIOS update which includes Zen 2 support among other things and fix this stupid static noise problem with latest drivers.
Or at least, release a BIOS update which fixed the static noise problem.

Since my machine suffered a failed BIOS update and the repair team was unable to replace the motherboard, I got a full refund for the unit.
So, right now I'm waiting for Acer (or another OEM) to release a laptop which has B550, Ryzen 3700x and RX 5700 with same beefy cooling as Acer created.

If there's one thing Acer did right with this machine, it was the cooling (that thing is better than many desktops while at the same time its very quiet).

If Acer makes an upgraded unit version with Zen 2 and Navi, they really need to provide continuous BIOS upgrades and also release an unlocked BIOS as well.
One of the problems on the PH517-61 is lack of customisation inside the BIOS (which also has a very locked up primitive user interface).

Is there any way more users can complain to Acer about the static noise problem and lack of BIOS updates which include Zen 2 support?

I mean, if desktop mobo OEM's can release free BIOS updates for their B350/B450 mobos continuously, then nothing prevents Acer from doing the same (and also, the ROM chip is more than big enough to include a BIOS which fixes existing problems, supports Zen 2 and has modern UI).

deksman2 <<<< also release an unlocked BIOS as well.>>>>>

That will never happen for the most obvious reasons there isnt any major laptop manufacturer releasing units with unlocked bios and there will never be for security reasons and regarding a new laptop that would support the new AMD cpus i really have my doubts on it all manufacturers are more focused on apus now and in fact acer its one of the really few laptop manufacturers who had work with amd cpus since a long time as more are joining the party now :)

<<lack of customisation inside the BIOS (which also has a very locked up primitive user interface).>>>

I have been working with acer laptops since 2008 and all bios are completely locked also the H500 bios its not and exception my H300 its also all locked as usual all bios should have exactly the same options available to the end user (apart from when it supports optane/raid etc) everything is the same in all of them if you or anyone are not happy with it you can get it unlocked yourself if you know exactly what you are doing to not brick it and at your own risk also warranty its automatically voided after doing so and you cant compare a desktop to a laptop in any way its not the same at all and its very complex

And again a bios update to the H500 to support the new zen2 is most likely not to happen if it was to happen it would already had happened the laptop its becoming an old model in the shelf now still a beast no doubt on that but like all beasts its left behind in order to proceed to newer designs/models

PS Also this thread its about gpu driver issues not about bios updates there is already a main thread for this which wont get anywhere anyway theres no point in keeping pressing the same key because its not happening and the more time it passes the more sure i am about it because it will become an obsolete model like all the other ones for ex the exclusive very expensive 21x

Just updating this thread , apparently the latest AMD Adrenaline drivers ver 20.1.4 solved the wake from sleep to Static display bug ..

This is just great, I only got the thing last week and the only big issues (for me) are solved. RDR2 is looking mighty fine, and I haven't even tweaked the graphic options yet.

I did consider the intel variant, but why would I need a hotter laptop with a limited cpu, ha ha. AMD owners have been justified.

    So this is good news
Did anyone else lose their ability to have free sync when installing this driver? I accidentally did a “factory reset” when I installed this driver which I assume is the problem (through the driver install). Then I uninstalled the AMD driver through windows key +I and the apps menu there.
Next I installed the windows original driver through device manager which put in the 2018 driver.
Finally I installed 20.1.4 but with the “factory reset” option disabled. Still my free sync slider is disabled and I cannot get it moved. Does anybody know how to deal with this?

Completely uninstall the graphics driver using DDU and start from the Acer driver and then onto this newer one.

I uninstalled the AMD driver through windows button + I and apps.
Then I booted into safe mode and ran DDU to remove it all.
Booted into windows and installed the Acer vga drivers.
Installed 20.1.4 and still I don’t have the free sync slider

     any other suggestions?
