How to fix Touchpad scrolling and SSD performance on Acer V3 112p?

Hi all,

I picked up an old V3-112p from my brother and have some questions about it. I think it is about 4-5 years old and runs Win10.

  1. is the touchpad supposed to able to scroll the screen, e.g. when viewing browser, scroll the page up and down? if it is not doing this, how to fix (I tried update driver but did not help, i set the BIOS to basic — if set to advanced the touchpad will not work)
  2. the laptop ssd seems to be very busy especially at start up. i disabled several services like phone link etc, and it helped a bit. Partly I guess is due to only 4GB memory, the SSD is often busy . Is there information / anyone tried to replace the original internal ssd with a faster high bandwidth ssd (and how to copy over the windows setup in this case?) ? or there are other things I can to do to avoid the ssd getting very busy at startup or when open an application like MS Edge.

Thanks.

How to fix Touchpad scrolling and SSD performance on Acer V3 112p?

Hi, it has a single memory slot that supports up to 8GB of DDR3L RAM, so you can replace the 4GB with an 8GB 2Rx8 DDR3-1600 module. It does not have a M.2 PCIe slot for an SSD but you can replace the 2.5" Sata HDD for a much faster 2.5" Sata-3 SSD like the Samsung 870 Evo V-NAND up to 2TB. Yes, Windows10 touchpad supports scrolling in the Edge browser and other Windows apps, Scroll not working on Touchpad [Windows 10] - Page 2 — Acer Community

Hi Puraw, thanks for your reply.

The laptop is actually older - bought in 2016, Aspire V3-112P with 4GB RAM and WDC WD5000L PVX-22V0TT0 SSD, running Win 10 Home.

I did a quick price check for the SSD and RAM modules, seems acceptable to spend the amount with an old PC. Hopefully this reduces the sluggish performance especially at start up.

If I upgrade the SSD to SATA 3, do I just copy over the content of the existing SSD to this new SSD and it will just boot up or more to be done? and will windows able to deal with this new SSD in some slower compatible mode initially and let me update the driver to use the full bandwidth of the SSD when I started windows?

No luck with the touchpad scroll. The touchpad does not work at all when I choose "Advanced" in UEFI .

In Mouse > control Panel, there is no One Finger Gesture nor Setting menu.

    Thanks for your help!

Hi, the most straight forward and safest way to transfer Windows10 from an older HDD to a new SSD is with Windows7 backup Image file creator that you will find in W10 Control Panel. You will need an external USB backup drive larger than the HDD that you can get for $80 at Amazon (Seagate Backup Plus). The program will make at the end a Windows Recovery USB flash drive that you use to restore the backup to your new Sata-3 SSD. I don't recommend cloning as when that fails you lose the W10 OS that you may not be able to download and activate anymore.

I have been using this program since 2010 on all my PCs and still use it with Windows11 24H2 today.

If your cursor will not move or your touchpad is not working at all:

    1. Remove connected devices - Remove all devices that are connected to the system except for the power cord. This includes external keyboard, mouse, flash drives, hard drives and other peripherals.
    2. Enable/disable your touchpad - Many systems allow you to turn the touchpad On or Off by pressing a key combination. On most models it is FN + F7 or FN + F2, but could also be a different function key. The touchpad function key will be labeled with one of the images below.
    3. Restart your computer - Restarting your system may help your touchpad start responding again.
    4. Reset BIOS or UEFI to default settings - Some systems have touchpad settings in the BIOS/UEFI.
    5. Reinstall touchpad drivers - Missing or incorrect drivers may cause your touchpad to not work properly. You can try downloading and installing the latest driver from our Acer Drivers and Manuals page. You may need to attach an external mouse to complete this process.
    6. Restore Windows- Newer versions of Windows allow you to restore your operating system without losing your personal data. Make sure you select the option to Keep my files.

If you can move your cursor but are having problems with cursor speed, erratic behavior or tapping and clicking:

    1. Adjust touchpad sensitivity - If your cursor is moving too fast or too slow, you can try changing your touchpad sensitivity.
    2. Disable tap to click - Accidentally making contact with the touchpad when typing can cause the cursor to jump around or leave the window.
