A good headset will bring your gaming experience to the next level, immersing you in the game, but getting it properly connected to your PC can sometimes be a hassle. This article will cover how to get your headset set up and working properly, and ensure it is actually connected correctly to utilize your gaming mic.
How to connect and test your gaming headset
Step 1: identify the type of connector that your headset uses from the following list, and connect it to the correct port on your computer.
- 3.5mm: Many headphones have separate 3.5mm connectors that need to be plugged into the correct ports on your computer. These will usually have a ‘Y’ connector, one plug for your audio input (mic), and one for your audio output. Connect both of these to your PC, and ensure they are connected to the correct jacks.
- USB: Some headphones connect via a USB cable. Simply plug this into an available USB port, and your computer should automatically detect and install any necessary drivers for your headphones.
Step 2: Test to make sure your headset is receiving an audio signal.
- Click on Start ⊞ and select Settings⚙.
- Click on System.
- Click the Sound page on the right side.
- Under the Output section, click the Choose where to play sound setting.
- Select the headset you want to use.
- Adjust the volume of the headset.
Step 3: Test your microphone
- Click on Start ⊞ and select Settings⚙.
- Click on System.
- Click the Sound page on the right side.
- Find the Input settings on the sound page.
- You should see your mic listed in this section, click the arrow next to its name, and then click Start test and speak at a normal volume into your microphone.
- You should see the mic input volume indicated by a blue slider bar.
- If your volume is too low, you can manually slide the input volume bar higher.
