Very high CPU temperature on Core Temp - unexplained

Hello,

It all started with me having fps drops on Bannerlord and World of Warcraft. It has been happening for a long time on the latter but I never paid attention.

So I started checking temperature. CPU was around 65°C when the computer was idle and 75-80 when it was on bannerlord.

The problem is that it is much higher since I updated my BIOS to 1.22. Now, it's around 85° C when idle and 100 when playing to the point the computer freezes or shuts down (I can't even restart it so I assume it's because it's hot).

What I want to say is that it does not feel like high temperatures at all. Especially that I have just cleaned the fans, the air coming out directly from the fans is cold. The CPU side is slightly hot but I was used to have my keyboard almost burning months ago and now it's "slightly" hot.

I have a G3-571, intel core I7-7700HQ CPU, 2,8 GHz, 16Go of RAM, Win 10 64 bits, NVIDIA GTX 1060.

If you have any suggestion on how to handle it (besides thermal paste? I suppose it would not explain all of this) please let me know! <3

How long have you owned the notebook? It would not be a bad idea to replace the thermal paste, as long as you know how to perform the procedure correctly:

My laptop is about 2 years and half old. When I cleaned the fans, I noticed that the paste was grey and not very thick. But since I didn’t have any, I decided not to touch it.

Do you think it would explain everything? If i replace it, would it go back to normal?
  • It can solve the problem. But you must perform the procedure correctly.

So I finally got some thermal paste (I hope this grey HY510 is ok). I noticed that there are other things called thermal pads.

Do I need to replace them or is it secondary?
  • I believe that it is not necessary to replace the thermal pads, as long as it is not too worn out. However, I will call colleague @xapim so that he can participate in this topic as well.

Thank you so much for your help.

So I changed the thermal paste today. Unfortunately, the temperature on Predator Sense or Core temp is still really high. It's reaches 97 degrees with a CPU at 50% only (GPU between 50 to 80%) of load.

Is it possible that it's only coming from the temperature sensor?
The air coming out of the laptop is cool yet it is showing around 60 degrees when idle.
When I increase the load (usually by launching Bannerlord with the highest settings), the air is warm but it does not look like 100°. I cannot be sure but I left the laptop open and touched the back of the heat sink (right after I turned it off) and it was just hot and not burning.
  • On thermal pads, there is no need to change if they are not worn. Now, regarding the temperatures, have you tried to uninstall and reinstall the predator sense? If temperatures remain high, many users often use the thermal kryonaut grizzly paste. Also, what version of windows 10 are you using? 1909 or 1809?

I have just reinstalled Predator Sense. Still very high temperatures. Maybe a bit more stable.

As for Windows, I have the 1909 version.

What happen when you are not using turbo boost follow steps↓
Right click on battery icon in taskbar→power option→click on change plan settings (The right side of the plan that was selected)→change advanced settings→expand processor power management
Now, expand minimum processor state and set 99% on plugged in
Again, expand maximum processor state and set 99% on plugged in

    Now apply→ok→play your game

From what I read, it's frequent for I7-7700K to be around 100° everytime you open an application or a program (according to an Intel rep). As long as the game is working. The good part of all of this is that it seems I don't have my FPS dropping down randomly despite the temperature.
  • did you apply the thermal paste correctly? In addition, some users are saying that a windows update is blocking undervolting.

Seems to me that it's a bad repaste use the spread method only a thin layer covering both diodes it's enough to much paste its bad also make sure you're using a good thermal paste like kryonaut or similar clean the fans and exit airflow properly and make sure the back it's lifted 2/3 inches at all times for a proper airflow

I tried multiple times with the thermal paste as you can see in the pictures below (the second picture is the current state). On the first picture, where you don't see relief (or volume), there is almost no paste at all (just dust).  It's the same result, very high temperatures (60° when idle, 95+ when I start an app or play).

@xapim I lifted my laptop by about 1,5 cm. Unfortunately, in the country I live in, the only thermal paste I could find is a gray paste called HY510 (thermal conductivity >1.93 W/m-k) from China or another one called ZP-340.

Maybe I should buy a good one from Europe and have it shipped here.

Interesting fact I just noticed. After playing World of Warcraft for about an hour, I noticed a very stable temperature at 96 degrees. When I launch the game, the temperature instantly rises to 96 and never changes whatever graphic settings I put on (very low or very high). The laptop is burning I can feel it on my keyboard.

But I don't understand why. It looks like it's using too much capacity?

Also, the CPU is used at 30-35% rate and the GPU is between 30 to 50%
  • I still think that you did not apply the thermal paste correctly. those temperatures are very high.
