Syntax error? Should it be volume4 attributes clear readonly?

OK. Forget doing any more with diskpart. Go back to the X : \> prompt.
Skip the 'bootrec /fixboot' that gave 'access denied' and skip the 'ren BCD BCD.backup'. Then see if the following command is accepted

    bcdboot D : \windows /l en-us /s Y: /f ALL

Yes, only 'attributes clear readonly' after volume4 has been  selected. But let's forget that and diskpart right now. Go back to the X : \> prompt.

Getting an error with a list of proper syntax for the bcd.exe command line. Hard to tell from your message where there may be spaces, can you help?

There's no spaces between the D and : and \ . If I put them close together with no spaces like this D:\ you get an unhappy face. Jack E/NJ

It was the spaces in the middle of the command that were hard to figure out because of the font on the community app. Got it to work, with the response

OK. Let's see what happens when you connect the SSD back onto the mainboard. Remove the USB stick. Then hit the power button. Hopefully, the Y: partition was still good and not overwritten as I had feared. And that your Windows partition is now good to go in a more timely manner. You're wayoverdue for soime good luck on this. Jack E/NJ

No joy. Still the exact same thing, with the power light coming on, the fan spinning up briefly, then the drive light flashing about once per second after that ad infinitum, never has the Acer logo screen come on. Tried again holding down the F2 key and same result. We've given it the old college try but I think it's about time to pack up our tools and go home. I'll run the SSD in the enclosure for access to any files I may need and probably then install it in the Lenovo laptop I bought, which has a place to plug in a 7mm SSD.

It IS probably some hardware problem on the motherboard, don't you think?

So I don't want to go back and search thru 6 pages of troubleshooting, does the old HDD still boot OK connected to the mainboard? Jack E/NJ

I don't have the old HDD. It's 400 miles away at another house. This entire adventure has been with the SSD, which tests perfect, so beats me. Probably before I toss the Acer, I'll try the old HDD when I get there in about 6 weeks, but I give it very little chance of being any different. Whatever is the problem is happening BEFORE it can load the Acer splash screen, so I doubt which drive I had in it would make much difference.

Hey, Jack. Should I try the bios flash (fn+esc) that supposedly works even when the machine won't boot? What do I have to lose at this point?

Yes. I was just about to say to give it a go. Can't hurt at this point. However, FN+ESC method almost never works. I think you earlier said that  sometimes the machine will boot with the SSD after a few hours. If you can get to that point, running the BIOS exe file from within the Windows environment is often the best way of getting it done. Jack E/NJ

Okay, thanks. I'll let it run for a day or two and see if it eventually gets to a boot, though you may recall that it is still set to boot first from the USB then the SSD, so not sure what effect that may have.
Where do I get the bios.exe file, please?

Should have no effect except for a very brief delay looking for a USB boot stick that isn't there. My machines are all set up with boot stick first. Jack E/NJ

It booted after about four hours. Where do I get the bios.exe file?

Never mind, I located it on the Acer site under my model and drivers. I've applied it and was hopeful that when it restarted it would magically fix the problem, but again no joy. I guess that's the end of the road.

WOOHOO! After updating the bios from 2.10 to 2.14 it looked like it had done nothing, but the machine booted in about 5 minutes rather than 4 hours. I used it for a while and then shut it down, waited a couple of minutes and restarted it. Ba-da-bing! The Acer splash screen came up and it booted right up. Tried it another couple times the be sure it was repeatable.  Yes! Don't you love a story with a happy ending? Likely was the bios all along!
