    >>> boot order to 1-SSD, 2-USB, 3-windows startup manager. >>>

Somehow, you've got to try to get back into the BIOS menu to change the boot order so USB is first. Disable secure boot.  Maybe disconnect the SSD again. Then try to boot from a Windows installation iso stick so we can get to an X : \> command prompt. Jack E/NJ

Thanks, Jack I'll try that. I bought a new computer and have been moving everything over, plus have had a heck of a time getting logged on to the community website. I have the Acer disconnected from the internet and sleeping so it doesn't try to reboot.

I'll give it a shot. What are we going to do if we get to a command prompt? When I did it before, I it said to insert the recovery media.  When I inserted my usb I had two options but can't remember for sure what they were.

I think so, but it's 350 miles from here in a drawer in my desk, so that's probably not going to be much help. But I see your point, maybe reinstall that and see if it boots?

With the SSD plugged into the mainboard, we want to try to boot from the USB stick only to get to the X : > prompt by clicking on advanced or repair options. Then we're gonna try to repair the SSD's EFI partition from the X prompt with a few choice internal CMD.exe commands. That's the plan anyway. Jack E/NJ

Okay, after removing the SSD in about 5 minutes, it did give me "boot failed" message and asked me to insert recovery media. Only one option there, "generic flash disk." Inserted the usb and hit enter and I got an Acer splash screen. Then asked for my keyboard layout, chose US (the mouse works). At that point I have two options: 1 Troubleshoot, reset your PC or see advanced options or 2: Turn off your PC. Now what?

I see the option for command prompt in the advanced troubleshooting, waiting for your response.
  • When you press shift + f10 in the windows installation and type the commands:
    disperse
    list disk
    Does the ssd appear correctly?

So, I'm at a command prompt but the ssd is still removed. Is there a way to change to boot order to usb first from here? If I plug the ssd back in, it seems to me we'll be right where we started. Please advise.

Choices from the Advanced Options menu: system restore; command prompt; system image recovery; uefi firmware settings; startup repair; or go baack to the previous build.

Can you get to the USB's X : > command prompt with the SSD plugged into the mainboard? Jack E/NJ

With the SSD plugged in, turn the system off. Insert your USB stick. Press & hold the F2 key. Turn the system on while still pressing and holding the F2. Does this bring you to the BIOS menu? Jack E/NJ

So, I'm confused. You had me remove the SSD and force it to go to the USB. Now you want me to shut it down and try to boot from the SDD again? Did this accomplish anything?  I tried "startup repair" which gave the the Acer splash screen far a minute or so and then said it couldn't repair it. Should I now reinstall the SSD then?

NO! With the SSD plugged in, turn the system off. Insert your USB stick. Press & hold the F2 key. Turn the system on while still pressing and holding the F2. Does this bring you to the BIOS menu? Jack E/NJ

You say "with the SSD plugged in." Plugged into what if not reinstalled in the machine?  Do you mean plugged into a USB port in an enclosure? Sorry if I seem dense, but I don't know where you want me to "plug it in."

Yes. Plugged into the mainboard in the enclosure. That's the best way.  The with the system off, insert your USB stick. Press & hold the F2 key. Then turn the system on while still pressing and holding the F2. Does this bring you to the BIOS menu? Jack E/NJ

Sorry for the confusion. The SSD should be inserted into the mainboard inside the laptop just like it normally would. Not in a USB port. At least not until we see if you can get into the BIOS menu by pressing & holding the F2 key, then turning the system on while still pressing and holding the F2 key. Jack E/NJ

Okay, we've gone full circle.  I have NOT been able to get into the bios for some time with the F2 key. Same result as before - it has the external power light on, the power light on, and the drive light is flashing about once per second. If I leave it overnight doing that, it will frequently be booted to the Windows sign on screen in the morning. Just as an experiment, I have left it that way with something heavy holding down the F2 key. We'll see what happens. If no success with that, I'll probably remove the SSD and send it in to be recycled.

I've got a Samsung SSD EVO 850 running on a V3-571G and its been running perfectly with Win-10 Pro for years, never ever had your problems, its not an Windows Update problem, it must be something with your Aspire E1-572-6870. Try to open the back and take the CMOS battery out and refit it or replace it first and see if you can get into BIOS.

If not, try and do a RESET but first, have you got another computer? As I would do a clone of your SSD with Samsung Data Migration first so that you can do an OP Reset of the SSD! Also take the battery out and boot with the PS cord plugged in only, then use the bootable USB or DVD installation media method inserted, to boot into recovery mode, as you don't need to get into BIOS usually to change settings of boot order.
Then to get into recovery mode, do the follow:
    • In the setup window, click on Next.
    • Then, Click on “Repair your computer.” bottom left corner.
    • It will lead you to the recovery environment.
    • Choose an Option
    • Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > chose either Startup Repair or System Restore

Before the machine is turned on, press and hold F2 key. While still holding F2 down, press the power key on. If still no joy, we can remove the SSD again. Then boot from the stick. Then we can try to repair the SSD EFI partition from a USB port with the USB-2-HDD cable. Jack E/NJ
