It would be interesting if you posted a photo of the boot tab of the bios, with the ssd and the usb stick (unit that contains the windows iso) connected to the computer.

That would be pretty difficult because the only way I can get to the bios is to shut everything down and remove the SSD, reboot and hold down F2. I'm confident I changed the boot order to USB, then the SSD. I had to reinstall the SSD to boot and am not anxious to remove it again.

No. We can only try to repair the slow-booting SSD only if the machine is booted from the USB Win10 installation stick. The installation stick has the advanced tools section that we need to repair the SSD.  Jack E/NJ

OK. If the USB stick is now first in the boot order, then insert the USB stick in the port and re-boot to the USB stick. Jack E/NJ

Hadn't heard back, so I did boot from the memory stick and then ran the executable and am reinstalling windows (it's 60% complete). Was I not supposed to do that?
  • Continue running the windows installation. Did you use an sd card? Most computers do not support sd card boot.

    No, it's a USB stick.

Sorry. No. I don't know what executable you're running but it's too late to try to repair the EFI partition now. Hopefully whatever you're running solves the problem. Jack E/NJ

Well, that's what I decided. I can't see that I'm any worse off if this doesn't work. I'll report what happens, it's at 80% complete. Says it will boot several times during the process - the big question is WILL it boot or hang.

If the new installation still has issues, then we can try to repair it the same way. Jack E/NJ

    Thanks - that's what I figured. I'm at 85%.

Update. It rebooted, but went through the same extended process (about 20 minutes) with the drive light flashing. It's now changed from a blue screen to a green screen and is now "working on updates." Looks like the reinstall isn't really going to help the booting problem, but we'll see.

Okay, JackE. Install is finished successfully (apparently). No change in the boot sequence, it still takes 20 minutes or so, whether it is trying to boot from the USB or (apparently) the SSD.

With windows installed, have you tried to update the bios, to see if it solves the problem permanently? This delay in the boot, can be some problem in the ME region of the bios.

I believe that updating the bios will not solve the problem.
Just yesterday, you told me this.

  • Yes, I know I know that. However, I see no other option. I suggest you try to update the bios. Let the battery charge 100% and the power adapter connected. Also disconnect all peripherals from the USB ports.

I'll hold off on that for a while. JackE wanted to try some type of repair that has to be done when booting off the USB stick. If you want me to remove all peripherals from the USB ports, that means I would have to change back to booting from the SSD. I'll wait until I hear from him.

OK. Please boot from the USB installation stick again. We've got to try to get to the X : > prompt. Once in the X : > prompt enter the following commands in order.

diskpart  (This should give the DISKPART> prompt in which you  enter the following commands
list disk (the SSD disk should be listed as disk0)
    select disk0
    list volume
select volume 0 (or whatever volume number is marked as EFI or FAT32)
    assign letter=Y:
    exit

If all goes well, you should be back at the X : > prompt for the next set of commands which I will post after I hear from you on if you successfully assign letter Y: to the volume above.

Okay, but it isn't booting at this point. I'll give it more time (what else can I do?).

You said that this happens after window update so go in safe mode and from there go in the window update history and uninstall the update. And wait for the next this update may have bugs.go in safe mode by continuous clicking ON F8 AFTER YOU CLICK ON POWER BUTTON TO START

It just isn't booting now. Just as when we began this adventure, a cold start gives me a power light and a disk access light flashing about once per second.  Pushing F8 or F2 continually or repeatedly concurrently with the power on does nothing.  Maybe it's really dead this time.
