How to enable Hardware Virtualization?

I have an ACER GX-281 desktop with Win10 Home installed and now trying to set up a Virtual Machine (VirtualBox). Without enabled hardware virtualization it is only possible to use 32bit OS, and I'm trying to figure out ways to use 64bit as well. No such option in UEFI as far as I can tell.
Ii feels pretty distasteful that I paid for a processor with Hardware Virtualization functionality (Ryzen 5 1600) but cannot use it because Acer forces me to pay for Pro version of Windows for it. Are there any workarounds?

  • You can check if virtualization is enabled here:

Unfortunately windows 10 home does not allow you to install hyper-v:

Secret sauce: "In the Security Center (Windows Defender), in "Core Isolation", the "Memory Integrity" was enabled. Disabling it restored Virtualbox 64 bit capabilities".

Thanks for the answers, especially to @wis but sadly problem is that Virtualization is disabled somewhere in firmware (and it doesn't even give the possibility to check it or change). Mentioned options doesn't show up in Defender (or anywhere else) without it.
And I cannot even learn the model of the motherboard because Acer hide this information

  • you if the virutalization is active here?

on the motherboard model, you can download the driverbooster and check here:

There is more than one way to skin a cat.
Someone else on this planet must have the same problem.  Hopefully he has posted the answer on the Internet.  At least we learned that 64 bit guests are possible, which puts us 1 step closer to resolution.
Did you exhaust all options mentioned here to locate the motherboard model?  If you have, Acer Support should be able to give you that information if you supply them with your SNID.
O.K., more elbow grease is called for.

Well, it appears that I missed the virtualbox.org FAQ.
Step 1: We know the answer is "yes".
Step 2: To enable in BIOS, see this webpage. It would be a good idea to create a system image & back up the old firmware before executing any changes to the BIOS.  Your Coronary Arteries will thank you for it.
    Steps 3 & 4: Self-evident.
    Further Notes
    Step 1: Self-evident.
Step 2: We don't know if you have legacy BIOS or UEFI; Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro.
Return to ben71's thread & check if there are any other preliminary steps you may need to take.
If you generate an error log, it would be highly unlikely that I will be able to interpret it.  The good news is that you don't need to know the model number of your motherboard & won't need to physically wrestle it to the ground.

Ok.  To solve your problem, all you have to do is update your computer's BIOS to the latest version.  That's it.  If you're still confused, go back and see my previous post.
    I'm not an Acer employee.

Sort of necropost, but I'd like to confirm that updating BIOS and moving to Pro version of Windows solved the issue
  • It would be interesting if you informed the current version of the bios.

I have the current version of the BIOS on my GX-281 and Hyper-V just installed without any errors or warnings. I am running W10 Pro, however.

How to check if virtualization is supported and enabled.
For those who are afraid of logging in to the BIOS, check whether the processor supports virtualization technology and whether it is enabled in BIOS, you can use the SecurAble program. This tool is free, no installation required - Portable, literally in two clicks - Launched, found , closed. You can XXXXXXX the app by going to the official SecurAble website or a direct link from - to.
    SecurAble Options:
      1. The maximum bit length parameter value represents the maximum bit depth of 32 bit or 64 bit.
    2. Values D.E.P Hardware - The technology responsible for security, implemented to counter malicious code launches.
    3. Hardware Virtualization Option - The parameter can give four values:
Yes - CPU virtualization technology is enabled
    No - CPU virtualization is not supported;
Locked - Enabled and Supported, but cannot be disabled in the BIOS
Locked - Technical support is available, but this is disabled and cannot be enabled in the BIOS.
Locked Off scrolls aren't always a sentence - the blinking BIOS can fix the situation.
