Was the screen on the right with 2 partitions presented to you when Win10 setup first asked which partition to install itself? Jack E/NJ

Yes it was, and when we selected the large partition, Windows started to install and copy the files but stopped because it said it cannot format the disk.

Do you have a spare HDD? try installing the OS there. 0x80070057 usually occurs when you are "trying to install a Windows operating system and the System Reserved Partition is corrupted."

Do you mean an external HDD? And if so would that then need to be plugged in every time we wanted to use the computer?

Does the Win10 installation USB stick that you created have repair or advanced options or other menu when it first boots up? Jack E/NJ

Hmm, Repairing the OS won't do either since from the looks of it he already deleted the partition/s where the OS is installed.

My guess is that the HDD is faulty but in this case I cant verify which part(either HDD, HDD Cable(?), or the Motherboard HDD Socket) hmm, most likely HDD itself.

Edit: Try deleting the partitions and install the OS again.

Please. We're not trying to repair the OS. We're trying to get to the command prompt or other means to clean and repartition and reformat the drive using diskpart via the installlation USB. Jack E/NJ

So that was your intention, I am sorry as I was just trying to help the guy with the little knowledge that I have. @AliPScott try doing this if you dont know how to enter command prompt.. boot the flash drive then press shift f10 that should open the command prompt.

when the usb is in it takes me straight to the page for agreement to use. If you can tell me how to get to an X:> prompt I will give it a go.
If I don't have the usb in it it now comes up with 'missing operating system

OK. At the X:\sources> prompt, enter 'diskpart'. The Diskpart> prompt should appear. At the diskpart> prompt enter 'list disk' . Then post screenshot of result. Jack E/NJ

    OK. At the diskpart> prompt
    (1) Enter 'select disk 0'
    (2) Enter 'list volume'

Post screenshot of result. Also, if you have a USB stick plugged into the machine, please remove it. Jack E/NJ
