Aspire E5-475-31NV SSD Upgrade

Hi - can someone tell me please how to upgrade this laptop drive to SSD?

It seems if i swap the 1TB HDD for a reasonably-priced SSD (say 120GB) then I am going to lose a lot of storage capacity. So the addition of an M.2 SATA SSD to run the OS on would seem to be the best solution, leaving a full 1TB storage on the HDD. However, i'm not very tech literate and i've been confused about the various interfaces (SATA, PCIe) and i've not been able to find a definitive answer (that i can understand) for the 31NV in particular. Crucial - for example - does not even list it as an option and lists no M2 SSDs at all for the 475.

So, can i upgrade in the way i have suggested and if so, what exact spec SSD should i look to purchase?

    @bully Unfortunately not! However you can tweak the Intel video card settings to try to improve performance:

    However it is recommended to check the ports using aida64:

    Thanks, i very much appreciate the reply but i'm afraid i'm not much wiser.

    It's hard find any of the model SSDs in your list - most seem to be superseded/ebay only. And all the nmve and  the PCI express stuff completely confuses me.

    Looking at it from a different angle, would this item - or one of the same spec - do the job? It seems to fit the "ssd m2 2280 sata 3" description:

    Presumably there would be no problem with booting to the M2 ssd and using the HDD as storage?

    Any ssd m2 2280 that is sata 3, will work on your notebook! The service guide also shows compatibility with ssd m2 2280 sata 3 of 512gb, see:

    However I'm not sure that the 512GB ssd will work on your notebook!

    SSD form factors.
    mSATA and eSATA.
    PCle SSD. Think of it as a SSD in a video slot.
    NVMe SSD Fastest but most expensive.
    The Western Digital stick seems fine & a good buy.

    Thanks. I saw the other thread and that's partly what confused me. I may be making some headway here. Do the 'three-pronged' M.2 SSDs fit into the 'two-pronged' socket on the motherboard? It looks more compatible with the 'two-pronged' NVMe SSD.
    Is the socket on the motherboard a SATA socket or a PCIe socket or somehow both? (Does this question even make sense!?)
    Is it worth paying more for a higher spec (faster) SSD or will differences be minimal compared to the effect of upgrading from HDD to, say, the WD green?

    Will a faster drive help with (P2P) video streaming? At the moment watching say a 1080p football match, the stream is fine for most of the time. But the movement becomes 'jerky' when the picture is a fast moving close-up; i wondered whether the on-board graphics performance would be improved by an SSD upgrade?

    Some notebooks support both nvme and sata 3! In the meantime I believe you will have more success in installing a ssd m2 sata 3! The performance difference between a ssd nvme and a sata 3, will not be noticeable to the normal user! With regard to hd, both sata 3 and nvme, will make the notebook faster in loading windows and other programs! However, ssd will not improve graphics performance or fps, but it will make loading games faster!

    Thanks - i'm still unclear where PCIe comes into all this?

    Is there any upgrade that will help graphics performance? Before i bought this laptop i found a consensus on various forums that an i3 processor was easily sufficient for watching streamed HD video. But the machine seems to have limitations that make it pretty useless for its intended purpose.

    Ssd nvme uses the pcie door! Most motherboards supporting nvme, also support ssd sata 3! The e5-575g version has two video cards, one is integrated with the processor (intel) and the other is a dedicated video card integrated motherboard (nvidia)! Make sure that the device manager of your model has these two video cards!

    Under 'display adaptors' i'm just showing Intel(R) graphics 520. But the model is a E5-475-31NV.

    This model has the processor integrated into the motherboard and therefore can not be replaced:

    This post should answer the 2 vs. 3 prongs question.  The M.2 slot is a PCLe slot which will accept the WD stick or a NVMe stick.  NVMe just means different software support, not a different hardware connection.
    In regards to performance, it may be possible with just the addition of the Western Digital stick.  Another option is to increase the RAM.  Your device supports up to 32 gb.  A third option is to install a NVMe stick.  Given the choice between the Crucial 16 gb RAM ( which is not available, but shown only for comparison) & the Kingston stick; it's not a difficult decision.  Search further online for better deals.

    Thanks again for your replies. I don't seem to have as many options in my intel settings - nothing i can see  that would make a difference. I guess i just bought the wrong laptop for what i want, but it's difficult to know before you try. Perhaps i really need a 'full HD' screen to stream 1080p video.

    The graphics card being upgraded wouldn't help with video quality.
    You can however access Intel VGA Control Panel via CNTRL + ALT + F12 and adjust settings such as contrast, color, vibrancy etc

    Video quality (from HD movies etc) is dependant on the display panel itself and the Intel 520 graphics is plenty powerful enough to make movies run at any quality (1080p) and possibly higher (1440 or 4k) depending on your processor and display type.
