Laptop randomly shuts down, "No bootable device"

Hi,

I've been having some trouble with my Acer Aspire E5-575 laptop recently. A few months ago it started to randomly shut down every once in a while. When trying to restart it, it would tell me there was "no bootable device" and the Windows Boot Manager was not listed in the BIOS. After a while (between a few minutes and multiple hours) it would be back and I was able to boot the laptop again. This problem has been getting worse recently and since yesterday, the laptop is almost unusable as it just keeps shutting down again and again. Has this problem occured to anyone before? I'd really like to know the cause as well as how to resolve it.

@flynosaur You may have a problem with a safety interlock switch on the mainboard. Here are two possible solutions relating to your model.  The "no bootable device" symptom might simply be an artifact of all the inadvertant shutdowns rather than an looming HDD failure but it might be worth checking it after sorting out the cause of the random shutdowns. It might also be important to note that before the laptop goes off, there's an error message on a blue screen with a sad face. I cannot remember exactly what it says, but I think it's something along the lines of "something has stopped working let me try to find out what's wrong buddy". However before it finds out what's wrong, it just shuts down.

OK. Typically, how often is this thing shutting off now? Every few mins? Every hour? Every few hours? Jack E/NJ

    Every 15 to 30 minutes.

OK. Let's see how long it stays on when you're neither typing, touching nor otherwise physically moving/disturbing the machine. Jack E/NJ

I left it on while going to the grocery store. It took me about 20 minutes and when I came back, it showed the "No bootable device" screen.

Doesn't sound too good for the HDD. I suggest trying to make a backup ASAP. Then try to run a chkdsk & scan. Jack E/NJ

In case the HDD is broken, can I just send it to Acer for repair? Bought the laptop about 18 months ago.

Yes but it will cost plenty if you didn't purchase an extended warranty beyond 12 mos. HDDs are fairly cheap and easy to replace these days if your're willing to do it yourself. Jack E/NJ

So my best option is to try to just replace it myself? Alright if that's the case, thank you so much for helping me out. If you got anything to add, I'll definitely check back on this post.

If it was my E5 and the old HDD was 500GB or less, I'd probably buy a much faster 2.5" SSD from Amazon.de and temporarily install it as a 2nd hard drive since the E5 has room for two 2.5" drives. Then I'd try to clone the old HDD on to the new SSD using something like AOMEI Backup freeware. Then I'd be all set to boot from the faster SSD whenever I was ready switch and continue using the old HDD as a 2nd storage drive till it finally crashes. Jack E/NJ
