Random Freezes After RAM Upgrade on PHN 16-71 (i7 13th Gen, RTX 4050)

Hi,

I recently upgraded the RAM on my PHN 16-71 laptop (Intel i7 13th Gen, RTX 4050) from the stock 2x8GB to 2x16GB Corsair 4800MHz C40 modules.

Since the upgrade, I’ve been experiencing random freezes during light usage such as web browsing or watching YouTube. The system hangs or becomes unresponsive at times. Interestingly, the laptop runs perfectly fine when playing games like GTA V, PUBG, CS2, or NFS Heat.

I’ve already reinstalled Windows 11 and updated the graphics card driver.

Thanks in advance!

The only thing that could be causing why you are experiencing random freezes during light usage is because you have bought the wrong Corsair and it could be an XMP ram, as you need the DDR5-4800MT/s CL40 normal type ram only and if its a different ram then that could be the cause of why the freezing is happening or its faulty ram.

Also, make sure that your PHN16-71 bios version 1.18 is installed as that has the latest cpu microcode for the Intel and all the Win-11 24H2 with all the updates to OS build: 26100.3915 are done, as that is essential.

Btw, I have the same exact laptop model with the i5-13500HX / RTX4050 and I'm running the Crucial 64GB kit @ 2x 32GB DDR5-4800MT/s CL40 and I've got no such problems with my Predator Neo laptop Neo. So try all these things but inspect the ram as that could be the main source of this problem. Good luck.

Hi, Corsair VENGEANCE® 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 DRAM 4800MT/s CL40 Memory Kit — Black, modules use XMP profile, this laptops does not work with XMP overclocked RAM, get standard JEDEC RAM from Crucial: Crucial 32GB Kit (16GBx2) DDR5-4800 SODIMM | CT2K16G48C40S5 | Crucial.com

I have updated the BIOS to the latest version, BIOS ver 1.18. I had previously updated to Windows 24H2, and the random freezes have been occurring more frequently, with several bugs preventing me from doing my work as a VJ. Because of that, I ended up reinstalling Windows three times.

So, because the RAM uses XMP overclocking, the only solution is to replace it with RAM that doesn’t use XMP overclocking.

    thank you bruh 🥹

I can’t use Windows 11 24H2 because of my work. In that version, the audio gets muted (maybe bugs windows 14H2) while I’m doing VJ, so thanks for your answers.

Let us do the basic steps first. First of all, we need to find out whether it is a hardware or software issue. Here are some of the steps to speed up or increase the performance your computer.

Try windows + r -  on the run window - type msconfig  - click ok
    click on services
check - hide all microsoft services
    click on disable all
    click on startup
    disable all the startup items
click on apply - ok  - restart the computer.     Loading process will be very fast now..Note: You can always enable the services and startup items later or set it to normal startup from selective startup later on the General tab  Try windows + r - on the run window - type appwiz.cpl  - click ok
it will show you the list of programs
remove all the unwanted third party programs.
    Please don’t remove any drivers.

If you are not sure , please don’t remove it.  Try windows + r - on the run window type temp - click ok -  it will show you the bunch of files -  try ctrl + a - select all files - press the shift key and click on delete files Try windows + r - on the run window type  %temp%  - click ok  - It will show you the bunch of files -  try ctrl + a - select all files - press the shift key and click on delete files If you are not able to remove some files - click on skip and then click click on continue.. Try windows + r  - on the run window - type cleanmgr - click ok

click on keep my files  ( only applications will be lost )   chose your account and type your password   - click on local reinstall  - click on reset

It will be in progress If the keep my files option is not working Go to troubleshoot  -  click on reset this pc – click on remove everything – click on local reinstall – just remove my files – click on reset
It will reinstall windows. If the just remove my files is not working..Go to troubleshoot  -  click on reset this pc – click on remove everything – click on local reinstall – Fully clean the drive – click on reset
It will reinstall windows. Note: You can also go to chose an option , continue , troubleshoot by holding the alt key + tapping f10  or alt gr + tapping f10 on the keyboard while turning on the computer.    Once you see the troubleshoot option, you can stop tapping the f10 and stop holding the alt key.    Then you can try the keep my files and remove everything ( just remove by files and fully clean the drive ) by following the steps which was mentioned above.

What I suggest is that you upgrade your PHN16-71 with the i7-13700HX cpu to the DDR5-4800MT/s CL40 type ram from Crucial, see their PHN16-71 suggested ram, as that is the correct ram and the Crucial ram works 100%. I'm using the exact Crucial 64GB ram kit at 2x 32GB DDR5-4800MT/s CL40 type ram in my PHN16-71 laptop that the link refers to and this ram kit works perfectly in my PHN16-71 with the i5-13500HX cpu and RTX4050 gpu.

The 13th Gen PHN16-71 laptops with the i5-13500HX and the i7-13700HX cpu's all have an Intel designed max ram speed of DDR5-4800MT/s CL40 type ram at max capacity of 192GB, but the PHN16-71 model with the i9-13900HX cpu has the higher ram speed of the DDR5-5600MT/s CL46 type ram and the same max capacity, so be aware of this also.

The PHN16-71 with the i5/i7 and the i9 cpu’s use the normal ram and NOT the XMP overclocked ram. Also be aware that the PHN16-71 with its 13th Gen cpu’s has an Intel theoretical max ram capacity of 192GB, but I can only vouch that the similar Predator PH3D15-71 SpecialLabs model with the i9-13900HX cpu has been successfully upgraded to 96GB total ram at 2x 48GB DDR5-5600MT/s CL46 but at this 96GB capacity, the ram runs at 4800MT/s speed instead of the designed 5600MT/s, so read the link above and see the full post of a community member that has done this upgrade. Good luck and hope this helps you out further.
