Acer Swift 3 sf316-51 - When I connect the charger there are sparks

When I connect the charger there are sparks, and its on and off actual charging the laptop. It beeps a lot so I don't think the connection is correct. It take ages to charge.

So I brought a new cable and it sparked when connecting but showed fully charged with in a hour. Which Is strange as I believed the level to be much less as it would not turn on before connecting the new cable.

Please advise?

You are not telling us if you use a USB-C charger or the standard AC power adapter with the round barrel plug, nor what Swift 3 model you have (SF314-512?). If you are using the standard "brick" AC power adapter and the spark occurs at the AC power plug of the adapter input and wall/extension socket, that is the capacitor discharging and a normal phenomenon. If this happens at the adapter output DC jack and port of your laptop that is bad and requires a competent technician to check that out. The beeping means power interruptions; could be a bad AC plug/cable, bad wall power outlet/socket or at the DC output barrel plug/pin making a bad contact (worn-out port, loose cable inside the laptop) or even bad power supply from the utility company.

If you are trying to charge the Swift 3 with a USB-C charger that is plugged in the wrong USB port that would cause sparks and all sorts of other nasty issues like a busted USB port, use the USB-C port with a battery or lightning bolt sign to charge and a 65 Watt USB-C charger.

The spark is at the laptop port.

I am using the standard brick charger. The old charger is the one that came with it.

Your laptop has Thunderbolt 4, Power Delivery (PD) why don't you try a 100-Watt USB-C charger: https://www.zdnet.com/article/best-usb-c-laptop-charger/ Any of these will work, a 100-Watt charger will charge the battery in less than 1 hour. I would forget about using old AC brick chargers and opt for the latest USB-C Thunderbolt 4 charging method. 😉

  • Can you also test the power adapter output with a multimeter and also check the bios version?

Another question, when you plug the computer into power, do you first plug the power adapter into the dcin port and then into the power outlet or extension cord?

I dont have a multimeter  and not sure how to check BIOS. But I can tell you I plug in the plug end in 1st. Is this wrong?

  • The correct thing is to connect the power adapter first to the dcin connector of the notebook. Then you plug the power adapter into the electrical outlet.

    I am in Uk

  • I advise buying a dock that has an external power supply. This will avoid overloading the notebook's usb ports.

First of all, sparking is a VERY BAD THING. When you first see something like that it's important to get it fixed before doing anything else that might cause the issue again. Are the sparks coming from the cable that plugs into the laptop or from inside the laptop? If inside then there's going to need to be some work by a technician. Your power connector is soldered directly to the motherboard, so any repair work done with it requires higher skills. If the sparks are coming from the cable then you just need a new power supply, either a direct or compatible replacement of the original or a USB-C charger as suggested above.

That charger supplies a maximum of 60W on USB-C1 only. If you use a USB-C to USB-C cable to connect it to the Thunderbolt port on the left side of your computer it should charge, just not as quickly as the correct charger will.

I got the cables but its not charging. It works in my mobile. The cable has 60w on it. Is this enough?

It should be enough if the laptop is off at least, though for running with the laptop turned on you really want the stock power. With a little less than stock I would expect to to either break even while running or lose charge slowly over time.

Get a 90-Watt USB charger, Thunderbolt supports up to 100 Watt. 60 Watt may not be enough to charge an almost depleted battery.

I brought this one and nothing. No charging light.

There are at least two possibilities… The charger you bought isn't working or the sparking you saw with the original charger has damaged the charging circuit on the motherboard. :(

Acer doesn't provide any access to support through the forums, we are all just other Acer users. You really need to contact Acer through their support pages for your locale. Your SF316-51 is a couple of years old and your issue might be that there is damage to the power supply or it's cable. Damage like that isn't something related to the design of the supply so wouldn't normally be covered under warranty.
