... So what's the correct information?

What is the maximum size of m.2 2280 PCIe SSD that you can install into the single m.2 slot on the PH315-51-71FS?

@BladeSlasher there is no capacity limit for the SSD.

The 2.5" HDD SSD in the SATA bay maybe, but the M.2 2280 PCIe definitely has a size limit.

Yes.   You can use the 2TB size.

Kindly go through the details which is captured from service manual designed for your computer.

2TB is the maximum that was tested for the SATA bay 2.5" HDD SSD. These very spec sheets show the the maximum that was tested for the M.2 2280 PCIe slot was 512GB.

My question is not about the HDD SSD, I already know that can hold up to 2TB... it's about the M.2 slot and what's the maximum size M.2 2280 memory stick that will work.

From your data sheets it looks like 512GB.

BladeSlasher all the above data is what Acer tested this laptop with but there's no practical limit on storage capacity as its only their type of format that limits that.  The last time there was a hardware/firmware limitation on capacity was back in the Windows XP days where you needed SP1 and updated motherboard firmware that supported 48-bit LBA addressing to use drives larger than I think 137GB.

Note: the capacities/formatting rules state clearly that in latest windows operating systems are as follows, MBR/Legacy formatting handles capacities up to 2.2TB and GUID (GPT) formatting which allocates 64 bits for logical block addresses, translating to 9.4 ZB(zeta-bytes, or 9.4*10²¹ bytes) of potential capacity. With the entire World Wide Web being estimated to be about 0.5 ZB in size, the GPT partitioning system has the potential to stay around for a long time. As at this current time there are and you can only purchase these drives with capacities of the likes of HDD 2.5" of up to 18TB with the Seagate Ironwolf or the 2.5" SSD of up to 8TB and M.2 NVMe of up to 8TB which are miniscule to the GPT max capacity.

That said, there have been some and minimal reports with M.2 Samsung 970 SSDs in various capacities not working properly in some XPS models, although I can't remember whether the XPS 15 9560 is included.  If you're considering a 970 model, I would recommend doing some searching on this and other appropriate forums to confirm that someone has successfully tested it in your system. If so, then there's no reason the 2TB or above version of M.2 drives shouldn't work.  Of course there's no good reason the Samsung 970 SSDs shouldn't work either, as they are high quality drives and yet they don't work on some systems, so hopefully you get the confirmation you're hoping for.

Guys I just realized how dumb I sound asking this... It's like asking what's the maximum size flash drive you can plug into your USB port 🙊🤦🏽‍♂️

This seems like a circular conversation. Hmmmm

  • Users have to understand that the service tab only shows hardware that has been tested. Acer tested the ph315-51 with 512gb and 1tb ssds. however, newer laptops support capacity greater than 2tb both in nvme format and 2.5" format because of the gpt partition.

Don't take risk. Go with the official size of 1 TB NVME M.2. And put 2 TB in 2.5 inch SATA SSD slot.

Problem with 2 TB NVME M.2 is not just the capacity but the size too. 2TB M.2 SSDs have chips on both sides, so it doesn't fit in all the M.2 slots.
