What does the “BOOTMGR is missing” error mean?
This error usually appears immediately after the Power On Self Test (POST) and may have several different causes. The most common reasons are misconfigured or corrupted files, corrupted hard drive sectors, Operating System upgrades, loose data cables, or the computer is trying to boot from a device that is not bootable such as a flash drive or an optical drive containing a non-bootable disc.
If you receive such an error, here are steps you can take to resolve this issue:
- Remove any portable storage devices such as flash drives and external hard drives form your computer. Also remove any discs in your computer’s optical drives.
- Confirm that your computer is trying to boot from the hard drive in the computer’s BIOS. This can be done by performing the following:
- Turn on the computer and tap the appropriate key to enter the BIOS. For desktop computers, tap the Delete key. For notebook computers, tap the F2 key.
- On notebooks and netbooks, use the computer’s arrow keys to navigate to the Boot option. For desktops, use the arrow keys to navigate to Advanced BIOS Features and tap Enter.
- Make sure that the computer’s hard drive is first in the Boot priority order by highlighting the device with the arrow keys. On notebooks or netbooks, use the F5 and F6 keys to move its position up or down in the list. For desktops, use the + (plus) or – (minus) keys to move the hard drive to the first position.
- Once the computer’s hard drive is in the number first position, tap the F10 key to Save and Exit the BIOS. You may be asked to confirm this choice by tapping the Enter key.
- At this point, the computer should try to restart on its own.
If you have opened your computer recently to upgrade or replace a hard drive or other component, check to see if the data cables are seated properly. If after following the steps above, you are still receiving the “BOOTMGR is missing” error, you may need to return the computer to the factory default configuration by reloading the Operating System.
