  • How do you shut it down? Do you press the button? Or click shutdown from the start menu? If you press the button, do you press it briefly, or hold it for 10 seconds? There's more than one way to shutdown, and it soulds like you're just putting it into sleep or hibernate. Here's a link about hibernation, sleep and shutdown…
  • Rose7 wrote: Ken, did you install Linux yet? How did it turn out for you? Thanks for the link to. I'll check it out. Yes, I installed Debian Linux because they aim for stability over rapid development. Their installation procedure is very smooth. I had intended to simply wipe Windows7 off the disk, but I decided to shrink…
  • I don't know about that model, but my Dell laptop gets a little eratic when my skin is dry. I solve that by licking my index finger when I'm using the touch pad. That makes a noticeable improvement.
  • Holy Cow! You're very brave to post your phone number on a public forum. You're right about the no-virus advantage of Linux. When people refer to "computer viruses", they really mean and should say "Windows viruses".
  • I'm eagerly awaiting the Aspire One I just ordered (not the same model as yours), and I'm going to wipe Windows and install Linux immediately upon receipt. (In fact, I'm going to try to boot to a Linux USB drive and make a backup of the hard disk in an unbooted state.) I've never used Linux Mint, but right now it's the…
  • Interesting. And a very good point. It's actually the optional "secure boot" protocol portion of UEFI that causes the problem. I'm convinced that Microsoft's main motivation has less to do with security than with making it more difficult for people to try Linux. Linux is a superior experience. And they had to know that the…
  • You probably mean the Acer Aspire One. There are many variants, with screen size ranging from 10.1" to 11.6", it weighs about 3 pounds.
  • But they MUST mean the product key on the "Certificate of Authenticity" sticker. I couldn't find where they were asking you for that. Maybe you can skip Acer's web site and apply directly at the Microsoft Upgrade Offer site.
  • If it still works, sell it on ebay.com (or donate it to a local school or charity). I almost never buy things on ebay because they ALWAYS sell for more than I think they're worth. If it doesn't work, does your local government have e-cycling? Just last week, I took a big CRT computer display to the county dump, where they…
  • I've never heard of a heat sink failing. Did it get so hot it cracked? (Is the processor broken?) Was it defective from the start? If you say you can find an after-market replacement, then why not buy it? It's very likely cheaper than what any OEM would sell it for.
  • Which model computer? Have you tried pressing F2 to get into the BIOS screen? Press several times just after attempting to power on. That would at least show it's not dead. You might also try gently cleaning the battery contacts, both on the battery and the PC, with a soft pencil eraser. Have you pressed and held the power…
