I just got this Aspire V3-731 and it has a UEFI Bios with Window 8. I just found out today it seems the recovery partition is usless at bootup. (messed PC cant boot windows). I called support to see how to boot to the recovery partition. They came back with Windows 8 doesnt support booting to the recovery. I as then what the hell good is it. Why even create it. I argued back that it's not a Windows problem if Windows haven't even booted, it must do with the UEFI Bios. I said so WTF you make and sell 1000's of laptops that will have no way to boot to the recovery partiton. They jsut said sorry. This is a real stupid decsion it would seem. Wasted space and wasted time.

Interesting.  And a very good point.

It's actually the optional "secure boot" protocol portion of UEFI that causes the problem.  I'm convinced that Microsoft's main motivation has less to do with security than with making it more difficult for people to try Linux.

Linux is a superior experience.  And they had to know that the initial reaction to Windows8 for many people is going to be very negative.  (I used it briefly--I don't want to use it.)  If it's too easy to install Linux, then many people will bail on Windows.  So approximately simultaneously with the release of this new awkward Windows version is the release of an even more awkward installation process to keep you from installing Linux or FreeBSD or Solaris.
