By default, when you close the lid to your laptop, it is automatically put to sleep. This feature helps conserve energy, extend battery life, and prevent the laptop from overheating when not in use.
If you're connecting your laptop to an external display, you may want to dock the laptop or move it out of the way so that you can use an external mouse or keyboard with the display. In order to prevent the laptop from sleeping when you close the lid, you can adjust the Power Settings in Windows.
To prevent your laptop from sleeping when closing the lid:
- Click Start ⊞
- Search and Click Control Panel
- Click Power Options
- In the left column, click Choose What Closing the Lid Does
- Locate the When I Close the Lid option
- Click the drop down and select Do Nothing
