Touchscreen Ghost Problem, Aspire R5-471T

When the laptop has been on but not active for a few minutes (for example, I step away to get something from the kitchen), often when I come back it is as if a ghost has taken over the keyboard.  Circles appear on the touchscreen as if a ghost were touching it (one user described it well as like raindrops falling on the surface of a pond).  These ghost touches also open apps and tabs, and often when I come back to my laptop I will find a dozen new applications open and running, or one will be open in six new tabs.  It's impossible to get control of the cursor or use your finger on the screen to shut the machine down.  Fortunately, if I close the laptop and wait a few beats, when I reopen it I can usually unlock the screen , close all the unwanted apps and get back to business.  Sometimes I have to open and close the laptop a couple of times before it behaves itself.  As far as I can tell, all the appropriate drivers are up-to-date.  Also, turning the touchpad off doesn't help.  This issue has been posted about several times over the years but I have never seen a definitive solution, and the last post was some time ago, so I am starting a new thread.  I am wondering if there is anyone out there who had this problem and solved it.  The best I have seen is someone who replaced the screen.  That seemed to solve the problem, although it apparently came back after a year.  ACER wants $600 to replace the screen (I am past warranty), but I have seen them on-line for about $120, and it doesn't seem too difficult a repair.  Has anybody had experience with this?  Thanks for your help!

Remarkably, the problem seems to have disappeared, even though I am using the device with touchscreen on, touchpad on, and wireless mouse hooked up.  Is it possible that the USB receiver for the mouse was not quite seated correctly, and that removing it and than putting back in solved the problem?  Or that disconnecting the mouse and then reconnecting it did some kind of a reset?  For now, it seems to be working, and I'll let you know if that changes.  In the meantime, thanks so much for your help!

Press WIN+R. Enter 'mrt'. Follow directions to do a full malicious software scan. This should take several hours to complete.  Jack E/NJ

Thanks for that idea!  My first thought when this started happening was that I had some malicious software, so I did a full scan and came up clean.

How often does this seem to happen? Once in a blue moon? A few times a day? Any predictability to it? Jack E/NJ

It happens any time the laptop is powered up but inactive for a few minutes. For this reason if I’m going to step away I usually put it into sleep mode or shut down.  Happens every day.

Does it still happen when you only press FN+F3 to turn off wifi? Jack E/NJ

What do you mean by 'six new tabs'? In a browser? And what new apps? Jack E/NJ

I mean that the “ghost” acts just like fingers touching the screen, or the cursor (which is also moving randomly about the screen). For example it often opens iCloud, probably because there is an iCloud app pinned to the task bar.  Similarly, since I use the Google browser, which has tabs at the top, it often opens new tabs, presumably because a random click happens in the + sign to open a new tab.  Do you think this could be a hardware problem solved by replacing the screen?

No. Download and run a full scan with the standalone McAfee Stinger 64-bit freeware. It's more thorough than mrt. https://www.mcafee.com/enterprise/en-us/downloads/free-tools/stinger.html

Thanks for that suggestion.  I downloaded and ran it but it didn't find any threats.

Does it happen with other browsers like IE or FireFox? Jack E/NJ

I opened Microsoft Edge and walked away for a bit and when I came back it had opened a bunch of apps on the task bar and pinned to start. Same old same old.

Arguably the best way to rule in or rule out a hardware issue is to back up your personal files and do a full remove everything ACER factory reset using the ALT+F10 cold boot method. Then immediately turn on SystemProtection in ControlPanel's restore point app just in case a Win10 or other update is creating the issue which can then be reversed. Jack E/NJ

I did that today and the problem still persists.

If SystemProtection was turned on, did you check to see if any ControlPanel restore points were created today since the reset? Jack E/NJ

I turned system protection on when windows was reinstalled, but it didn’t create any restore points (I just went in and created one manually). But I don’t see the benefit since the ghost problem was not affected by the system reset. Hardware problem?

If you didn't see any restore points, even by clicking on the show more box, then yes it suggests a puzzling hardware issue. If you toggle the touchscreen off with the FN+F11 combo, does it still happen? Jack E/NJ

Turned off the touch screen and left it for a while.  When I came back 27 different screens had opened up, including Microsoft Edge about 12 times.

Doesn't seem to be the touchscreen hardware. But leave it off. What happens when you also turn off the touchpad?  Jack E/NJ

The problem recurs with both touch pad and screen off at the same time.
