I wonder though, since you have a bootable Ubuntu USB stick, can't you boot into it instead of going straight for the installation? If you can, does it also freeze or do you get to a working desktop?
At this point probably any Ubuntu forum is able to give you better advice or guide you through the quirks of getting it all working correctly. None of us (I think) are Ubuntu users, there's Mint (close enough, but not Ubuntu), openSUSE, even OpenMandriva, and Arch.
My recommendation is that you do not connect to the internet or download any updates or packages during the installation.Skip all these steps and only after installed update, is necessary.
