More than useful and Linux information too, because we know it's not a software issue. Since they're two quite different OSs why don't share the code for most of the things.

What I saw is that all memories share the same profile information and even across subtimings, which is awesome, but there's one things that is different between the 8 GB sticks and the 4 GB ones, ranks. The 8 GB sticks are 2R while the 4 GB ones are 1R... Think of it as putting butter in the toast on both sides vs just on one.

So I wonder, what happens if you configure things this way:
     - DIMM 1: 8 GB
     - DIMM 2: 4 GB
     - DIMM 3: 8 GB
     - DIMM 4: empty.

    And the other way around:
     - DIMM 1: 4 GB
     - DIMM 2: 8 GB
     - DIMM 3: 4 GB
     - DIMM 4: empty.

Would you get 16GBs of memory in total in the first configuration and 12 GB in the second... or 12 GB in both cases?

If you get 12 in both cases, it'd mean your machine doesn't particularly like double ranked DIMMs (for some reason) and you're getting just half of what those 8 GB sticks provide. You may need to find 8 GB sticks that are still 1R instead of 2R and luckily that's one of the specs that are detailed by the manufacturer.

@Archimede >>>At the end : slot 2 and slot 4 loaded or empty are not used by my PC, the only memory considered useful is in slot 1 and 3.>>>

Still not sure yet what's going on? The BIOS still sees the full 24GB installed. Windows still see the full 24GB installed but reserves 8GB to make only 16GB usable. Cinnamon presumably is doing something similar.

PS to @Archimede : Intel quad-core cpus usually have a Q in their model number.

    To Aphanic... who ask for

You can find the result in the test b) (posted this evening) where 8+8 Gb are available and 4 Gb blocked to Hardware

    And the other way around:
     - DIMM 1: 4 GB
     - DIMM 2: 8 GB
     - DIMM 3: 4 GB
     - DIMM 4: empty.
I should have to try but I think the result is : 4+4=8 Gb available and 8 Gb blocked to hardware .

    Wow, WTF...

So whatever got put in the second slot got reserved for hardware?! Sounds like something only changeable by a firmware upgrade. By default those parameters fall under the advanced category and aren't shown in consumer BIOSes (they're locked down).

What a bummer man... get in touch with Acer support and explain the case, I doubt you'd get anywhere, but if the issue gets to the appropriate department maybe they'll look into issuing a fix.

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help, nothing comes to mind; the sticks you have are as compatible as they can be, they have profiles for the same frequencies, at the same timings, yeah, 2 of them are 2R vs the others.

But after seeing that the computer reserves whatever put you in slot 2 (and 4 presumably?) there's nothing I can suggest that would improve the situation, for the time being I'd keep the bigger sticks in use and have the 4 GB ones for those "reserves".
  • In addition to what colleague aphanic said, have you checked the version of the bios?

His current BIOS sees the full 24GB physically installed. Windows also sees the full 24GB physically installed. But for some reason 8GB is being hardware reserved and unavailable to Windows.

So does this mean the current BIOS version is to blame? Or the current Windows version is to blame? I'm gonna guess the current Windows version really isn't ready to access more than 16GB on this particular model.  Maybe some future update will fix the situation? Maybe ACER tech service can explain it?

It doesn't matter. It was a good experience.

I agree that the experience ***is*** good. But I think we still must explain why only 16GB seems to be available when both the BIOS Information tab and Windows TaskManager sees 24GB as physically installed!!! Jack E/NJ

  • I would check the possibility to update the bios.
