Good evening, I own your notebook Aspire V3-772G with 2x4Gb RAM inside. To have better performance with an Autocad software I have bought n.2 RAM module Crucial type CT102464BF160B of 8Gb each to have 24 Gb. 24 Gb is correctely recognise from BIOS (I have vers 1.15) but windows10 give me the following info : 16 Gb available and 8 Gb for Hardware. In start option advance setting "Max Memory" is not selected. What Have I to do for having al RAM available ? I hope someone have had my problem and he was able to solve. Thank you

Press WIN+R. Enter 'msconfig'. Click Boot tab. Click Advanced option button. What is max memory set to? Jack E/NJ

Checkmark number of processors. Select largest number available --- probably 4. Then choose maxmem as 1000MB. Then reboot. Check msinfo32 and msconfig again to see what changes occurred. Jack E/NJ

  • @JackECan you access the command prompt by pressing alt + f10? https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/66482-memory-set-maximum-amount-used-windows.html
If the alt + f10 command does not work, you may be able to use the command prompt by clicking "repair startup", using a cold installation with the microsft iso.

Please don't make any other changes to msconfig boot tab advanced settings right now. I experimented with some of the settings that we discussed on my own machine and ran into Boot problems that we will discuss further in this thread. So please standby while colleague @egydiocoelho tries to help us with this memory issue.

@egydiocoelho I had to use the Win10 installation USB stick to access the X : \ command prompt. I'm at the diskpart prompt and all three Win10 volumes/partitions (C : \ , Recovery & ESP ) are listed as healthy. But obviously they are not. I am thinking of assigning a drive letter to the ESP partition. Then run bootrec /fixboot and bcdboot c:\windows /l en-us /s Y: /f ALL on the \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\ subdirectory. What do you think?

@JackeE Before making any changes to the ESP partition, is it possible that fast startup interfered in something, when you changed the maximum amount of ram? What happens when you disable cmd fast startup using the powercfg -h off command?

@egydiocoelho I looked at your 7forums link. I'm not quite sure about the best way to correct the msconfig issue caused by changing the number of processors box and the maxmem box. They were originally unchecked with 1 processor and 0 maxmem. I checkmarked the processors at 4 and checkmarked maxmem at 8GB. And then it rebooted OK. But when I checkmarked the processors back to 1 and maxmem to 0GB, it wouldn't reboot. I'm not sure if either of them are still checkmarked since I can't run misconfig from the X : \ command prompt. what would you suggest? Jack E/NJ

Note: I had a restore point on the C: \ partition from yesterday that I tried from the Win10 USB recovery tools. But it apparently only restored the C : \ partition to yesterday and unassigned the letter I gave to the ESP partition. It still won't boot so it still didn't fix whatever was messed up in ESP partition by the msconfig changes . So it'll probably have to be repaired from the X : \ command prompt. I can still see all my personal files on the C : \ drive from the X : \ command prompt so nothing would be lost by xcopy-ing to another stick. Just won't boot into Windows. Jack E/NJ

  • I searched on google and found this article on the dell website, about the repair of the esp partition: https://www.dell.com/support/article/pt-br/sln300987/how-to-repair-the-efi-bootloader-on-a-gpt-hdd-for-windows-7-8-8-1-and-10-on-your-dell-pc?lang=en

When you assign a letter on the esp partition, does windows boot appear?

Thanks @egydiocoelho . The Dell procedure is essentially the same as the one mentioned earlier to run bootrec /fixboot and bcdboot c:\windows /l en-us /s Y: /f ALL on the Y: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\ subdirectory. The problem is the latest Win10 2004 version command prompt seems to deny access to executing the bootrec /fixboot command. So far, the only way around this seems to be to try a Win10 1607 or earlier version command prompt. If that doesn't work, then the EFI partition has to be FAT32 reformatted and rebuilt with the bcdboot C:\windows /s Y: /f UEFI command which I'm reluctant to do. Jack E/NJ

  • @JackEThat's why I would like to know if the microsoft boot is still available here:

Is the windows boot manager also still available in the bios?

Yes. When assigned the letter Y: using diskpart, the Y:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot subdirectory is there and fully populated in the EFI/ESP FAT32 partition. And WindowBootManager is still available in the BIOS.

But the only way the bootrec /fixboot and bcdboot c:\windows /l en-us /s Y: /f ALL commands work is with Win10 version 1511 or earlier X : \ command prompt. The Win10 version 1607 or later X : \ command prompts are access denied and won't work even though their attributes aren't set read-only. It's as if the later Win10 version X : \ command prompts are not elevated.

Accordingly, my machine is now back to normal boot but only by using the Win10 version 1511 X : \ command prompt. Thanks for your contributions @egydiocoelho !!!

Now we can move on to the OP's problem. Why do you think 8GB of RAM are hardware reserved  out of 24GB total? 33% of total RAM being hardware reserved and unavailable seems quite excessive. There is another user with a similar problem where  25% of total RAM being hardware reserved for the integrated GPU. This also seems excessive. Checking the BIOS for options that might available to control this, even with Ctrl+S, does not seem to available. What do you think?

That doesn't seem to  explain this msinfo32 result. 8GB looks like it was just reserved and not available??? Maybe msinfo32 isn't accurate? Jack E/NJ
