Acer Aspire A515-51G charge switches on and off while plugged in after 50% charge is done.

BlazinGirlBlazinGirl Member Posts: 8 New User
My laptop (Acer Aspire A515-51G) is facing a battery issue since past couple of months. After I plug it to charge ,it charges to about 50% and after that it continues notifying me as if I have unplugged the charger or that my charge is full. Like although it is plugged in, the charge switches on and off on its own. It is really irritating to work under such conditions when my laptop keeps notifying after each second. I'm worried that this issue might affect my battery. I have already tried and tested all the solutions provided on net, including updating my Microsoft ACIP Compliant Control Battery, charging the device to full and using it to full and again recharging it to full, trying an alternative charger to check whether the issue is with the charger. Turns out while I plugged in the other charger my PC faced the same problem. Also, I plugged in my charger to another Acer Aspire(same model),that PC didn't face any such issue as mine faces, my charger is fine, there has to be something wrong in my PC.
Can anyone suggest what can be done at the moment to fix the issue or have anyone else faced the same issue an what have you done to solve it?
Thank you in advance.

Also I can see my charge increasing in the battery icon shown in the taskbar. Only thing is the notification sound that's irritating me and also I think this might damage my battery.

The smartbattery shows a battery wear of 25.9%. What happens when you calibrate the battery?

I don't really understand what the term "battery wear" means... I'm actually totally new to such things so if you could help me out with explaining that would be great.
Also if by "calibrating" you mean changing the critical battery level ranges, I have already done them. Now if you suggest I will change the ranges again and then check the battery with hwinfo64.
If you could be a bit more explainatory, that would be great.
    Thank you.

The battery life is counted in cycles, that is, whenever the battery is charged 100% and discharged 100%, it will be counted as a cycle. Because of this, the battery will become worn out. Battery calibration will cause the battery meter to count the correct battery life: https://www.gearbest.com/blog/how-to/how-to-calibrate-your-laptop-battery-correctly-and-safely-415

I calibrated my battery as shown in the above blog whose link you shared.
I'm still facing the same issue plus my wear level has increased to 50.2%.

I'd say the problem has to do with the battery, how long have you had the laptop for?

Batteries are made of cells (commonly 3 nowadays), which is where the energy is stored, and associated circuitry. That circuitry is in charge of reporting data to the machine, making sure the cells are not completely discharged (or over charged), etc.

As they're charged and discharged, cells deteriorate and they lose capacity over time. In other words, they're able to hold less energy compared to when they're brand new (and so the battery lasts less). That's what the battery wear represents, it's a measurement of how degraded the battery is.

It may not be accurate, the circuitry inside the battery may report wrong data. For example, the machine may think the battery is still charged when it's not and suddenly power off. Calibrating a battery is a way to make the controller report more accurate data, traditionally at least, I don't know where the current best practices stand in regards to it (generally speaking, fully discharging a battery repeatedly is bad for the cells, just like extreme heat). The system would then work with that data when estimating how much time is left when running on battery or which charge % it's at.

After all this preface, a battery wear of 50% implies the battery is able to hold half the charge it could when it was new. It could be age related if that laptop has been in use for a while (say a year or two, degradation depends on usage), it could be a bad cell (the others being in good condition), maybe even a busted controller inside the battery (it's not doing what it's supposed to be, it's damaged somehow). It's hard to tell without examining the battery.

The cause of the problem you're experiencing could also be the charging circuitry in the motherboard, a short or a dying component could result in interrupted charging; but my money is on the battery because failures there are way more common.

If your laptop is still on warranty it may be interesting to contact Acer and see if they can take a look at it. If the battery needs to be replaced and the problem is not in the motherboard it may not be covered by the standard warranty, some manufacturers don't include batteries because they're expected not to hold enough energy at some point.

If it's not on warranty, an option would be to buy a replacement battery (I don't know if Acer sells them directly, cheap 3rd party alternatives are usually subpar to put it mildly, they last less) and replace it yourself. It may sound daunting, but I'm sure there are video guides for your model on YouTube for example (the general gist is unscrew the back plate, disconnect the battery connector, take it out and put the new one in). It's not difficult ;).

    Sounds good...
Maybe I'll give it a try(replacing the battery) not right now though... later perhaps.
Thanks for your suggestion btw 😊

If you are really changing the battery, you should pay attention to the voltage. The new battery must have the same voltage as the old battery. See this video:

I said "maybe" which is probably a no... I will opt for fixing my issue than just replacing it...my battery is fine and pretty much good to go... I do see there is some internal factor messing up such as my driver or anything else which I will try fixing.
Thanks for the help, both of you :)
