I want to upgrade my 7741G (i5-460M, R5650, HDD) to i7-640M or i7-720QM (didnt decide yet, get more cores or more Hz?) and SSD.
I have 2 mini PCI-E slots, one is used by WiFi card and the second is empty (I think some models used it for Bluetooth module). Can I use my free mini PCI-E slot for SSD (according to google some laptops can). Is this port connected to SATA controller and will work with SSD or not?
If not I will have to buy HDD bay for DVD slot and put DVD drive into external case.

    Good afternoon wbzb !

I believe your model is: https://www.acer.com/datasheets/2010/4876/7741G/LX.PXB02.081.html

    Right?

The processor question should check if your model has the rPGA socket.
If so, i7-640M would be compatible, but i7-720QM would not.

As for the mini-PCIe connection, if the system reads a Sata mini-PCI SSD, it will only be recognized as cache due to chipset controllers.

    Yup, this is the one.
So it seems I have to buy caddy for HDD and external case for DVD...
About my current CPU, HWinfo says CPU Platform: Socket G1 (rPGA988A)
About 720QM, I've read few topics where ppl say it works, some guy told he put even 740QM in (7741zg mainboard), but it was overheating and impossible to work. According to https://ark.intel.com/content/www/pl/pl/ark/compare.html?productIds=49024,50179,49666,43122 all of them use PGA988. Why do You think 720QM wont work?

720Qm will not work as it has TDP (45W) larger than the series power support base which is 35W.
This causes overheating and lack of support from the charger and internal controllers.

hmmm, thanks, tbh I was more into 720qm (because of half price of 640m), and now I have to reconsider it once more, maybe 560M...

Like those small Intel Optane disks or something else?

    Almost...
in fact, they are 2260 mini SSDs that the controllers use as a cache to increase system performance.

The answer of Acer Support, in response of this question (20/03/2020). Sorry it's in Spanish.

El puesto donde ha colocado el SSD es un periférico para módulos 3g y por tal motivo el ordenador no lo reconocerá.
