I am upgrading an old Aspire 5732Z laptop.
I have already replaced the 250GB HDD with a 500GB Samsung SDD and updated the OS from Win 7 to Win 10.
That has already improved the startup time significantly.

Now I want to increase the RAM from 3GB to the maximum 4GB.
It currently has a 1333MHz M471B5673FH0-CH9 2GB Module and a 1066MHz M471B2873EH1-CF8 1GB Module (both Samsung).
The 2GB Module uses PC3-10700 667MHz devices, the 1GB Module uses PC3-8500F 533MHz devices.
i.e. the two modules have different speed specifications.
This seems rather strange, but it's been that way since the laptop was first purchased.

My questions are...

In the existing configuration, is the RAM speed performance throttled by the 1066MHz 1GB Module?
If I replace the 1GB Module with a second 1333MHz M471B5673FH0-CH9 2GB Module, will I get better performance?
I assume if I replace the 1GB Module with a 1066MHz 2GB Module such as a Samsung M471B567EH1-CF8, the performance will be the same as before.

    Good afternoon brian_mk !

    This model supports a maximum of 4Gb RAM (2 slots, 2x2Gb each) So-DIMM DDR2 667 / 800Mhz

If you want to perform better, you should use 2 identical RAM modules in capacity, frequency, etc ...
Final performance is limited by lower frequency performance.

There is two variantes for this serie: DDR2 or DDR3. Her/his laptop is a DDR3 model... pretty sure at 1066MHz.
    MB.PGV02.001 - MAIN BD.GL40.ICH9M.DDR2
    MB.PPB02.001 - MAIN BD.GL40.WO/CPU/RAM.DDR3

    It's DDR3.

What I'm unsure about is whether the MoBo / Intel Chipset actually supports the faster 1333MHz RAM modules?
In other words is there anything to be gained by installing 1333MHz vs 1066 MHz RAM or is it restricted by the MoBo to 1066 MHz max in any case?

    Hello,
    What processor do you have?
    It's a Pentium T4400 (2.2GHz, 800 MHz FSB).

The Intel GL40 chipset supports DDR3 at 667, 800 and 1066MHz so 1066MHz is the maximum frequency.

Is it also worth considering upgrading the CPU from the T4400 to T9500?
Is the T9500 supported by the BIOS (Version 3.07)?

    Hello,
As far as I know, the Intel GL40 chipset doesn't support this processor.

    That's not what I've read:-

As far as I can tell, the T9500 is supported by the Intel GL40 hardware.
What I'm unsure about is whether it's supported by the BIOS in the Aspire 5732z?

The T9500 CPU is still relatively expensive (£70 new on eBay uk) and it could turn out that the performance improvement may not make it a worthwhile upgrade.
I'd still be interested to know if anyone has had success with this.

The two CPUs are compared here:-

However, in the benchmark tests, the T4000 base clock is 2.2GHz vs 2.55GHz for the T9500, so unless I increase the clock speed I wouldn't see all that improvement.
The main improvement I would get is down to the 6MB L2 cache in the T9500 vs only 1MB in the T4400 (assuming it will work with the 5732Z BIOS).
