Bootable drive not detected in Bios ACER Swift SF514-55T-70LG

Hello all,

I recently bought an Acer Aspire 7 which had a free SSD slot, so I recently got a SSD and installed it. It is a WD M.2 500Gb, no problem after installation, Windows detects it and I assigned a letter to a NTFS partition.

Now I would like to migrate Windows on it in order to make it all faster. I read I could simply clone Windows 10 using EaseUS Todo Backup, which I did. The cloning went well, all partitions were cloned from my HDD, including Windows 10.

However, when I enter the Bios with F2, the SSD is detected (as HDD0) as well as the original hard drive (as HDD01) but only the HDD appears as a bootable device in UEFI mode. If I switch to Legacy mode, the SSD pops up in the list but remains unbootable.

I then decided to try another solution: to clean install W10 from a bootable USB. I created a bootable UBS key from a W10 ISO using another tool, which went smoothly (the EFI file is there) but... it is also absent from the bootable devices in the Bios.

I think my laptop refuses to boot from any other device, even bootable ones. Any solution?

Thanks a lot.

had you enable F12 key as boot menu on BIOS?
if not, enable it, and with your USB flash drive plugged press F12 key at boot and check if it's listed.
    if not...

    1) download a windows 10 iso using Microsof tool:
select the proper windows 10 version (the same installed on your laptop) and choose to save it as iso file when prompted
    2) download Rufus:
plug your USB flash drive, run Rufus then:
select ISO image from the dropdown menu near "Create a bootable disk"
click on the little icon on the right and browse to the windows 10 downloaded iso file
as  Partitions scheme select "GPT partition scheme for UEFI"
    as File system select "FAT32"
    click on Start
wait until it finish, then uplug your USB flash drive
    3) backup all your personal data *
    4) Reboot to BIOS, pressing F2 at boot, then press F9 to load default and F10 to save and exit
    5) plug your USB flash drive and at boot press F12 (if F12 doesn't work, see if it auto-recognise the USB flash drive or press F2 to enter BIOS and enable F12 boot menu under BOOT tab), choose the USB flash drive as bootable device

and remember that 2 UEFi installation of the same OS, can create issues.

    Thank you for your reply,
I forgot to mention that I indeed enabled F12 key as a boot menu, neither USB Key nor the SSD showed up there.
But I will try following your instructions and see if it works using Rufus.

My plan would be to clean up my first drive once I installed Windows on the SSD, so I would have only one OS.

    Hello,

    little update.
So I followed your instructions, managed to create a bootable drive with Rufus and a W10 ISO, but the drive remains invisible in the bootable devices list.
I really followed every step, everything went well with Rufus, I do not understand.

In the bios (F2) main menu, I can see the HDD and the SSD, but not the USB drive. In the boot menu, only the HDD appears.
    Same in the F12 menu.

    Any idea?
    Thank you!

is your BIOS set as UEFI?
remember that having 2 windows installation of the same OS (cloning) can create issues on recognising the correct drive.
my suggestion is to take off the HDD and then check if windows bootable manager is the first bootable device (not the SSD or the HDD, since the boot is managed by WBM)

    Hi,
Yes my BIOS is set as UEFI and AHCI.

I took of the HDD and when I turn the PC on, the Acer logo appears and right after a "No bootable device" message. I can access the bios, the HDD1 line is empty,  the HDD0 line shows the SSD but the boot devices list is empty in the boot menu.

It seems that whatever I do, only the main HDD is recognized as a bootable device.

    that's really strange.
try to reset BIOS to factory, press F9 and then F10 to save and exit, then enter again BIOS and enable F12 then save and exit, reboot, press F12 and check if the USB flash drive is recognised.

can you report the BIOS version installed and the complete model number?

    Hi,
    model: Aspire A715-71G
    Bios version: 1.10
    SMBIOS version: 3.0

    Tried F9 already, no change.

I can see on the Acer website that there is a 1.13 version of the bios, should I download it? There are also updates for MRC code.

First, check the connection. Then check the BIOS settings. You must configure the boot order sequence in BIOS settings so that your computer can make its own decision which physical device it should select to boot from. So, to make BIOS correctly detect your USB drive and pick it to boot the computer, make sure that you choose the USB as the boot sequence priority. If it still cannot detected, create another bootable disk with another software and have a try.

I have the same problem on my Spin 351-15. I replaced the HDD with an SSD. Installed a Win10 from USB, but after install restart, it recycles back to the Windows Setup screen again. It is as if the SSD is NOT recognized as a BOOTABLE DEVICE after installation. Tried pressing F12 during the install restart to make it boot on the SSD, but it's missing from the Boot Manager. Only the USB shows up hence the recycling. Under BIOS though, HDD1: SPCC Solid State Disk shows up in boot priority. I tried F2 also, but that didn't work either.

I see a black CMD screen pop out for a few milliseconds, after the install restart as if it's trying to connect to a network? or continue the install but it doesn't go through so it starts back up from the USB since SSD is not bootable.

This is is a refurbished Acer Spin bought from Amazon.

You may receive the error "No Bootable Device" if your computer does not detect a hard drive, solid state drive, or other bootable drive to load the operating system. This can sometimes be caused by a change to settings in your BIOS or UEFI. Use the following steps to resolve this situation:

    1. Hold the power-button for 5 seconds to power off the device.
    2. Power on the system. As soon as the first logo screen appears, immediately press the F2 key, or the DEL key if you have a desktop, to enter the BIOS.
    3. Press F9 and then ENTER to load the default configuration. Press F10 to save your changes, and restart the system. Select Yes and press ENTER to confirm.

    Hi,

A Google search led me to this very page. The same issue here, in other words there is no USB showing in BIOS / BOOT.

    Boot Mode: UEFI
    Secure Boot: Disabled
    Boot priority order:
    1. Windows Boot Manager

    !And Nothing Else!

Reset to default = No result.

    MAIN/F12 Boot Menu: Enabled

USB ports working fine under Windows File Explorer

Connecting a bootable USB does not result by restart or while accessing BIOS (F2).

BIOS version 1.08 (InsydeH20 Setup Utility).

    WINDOWS SPECS
    Edition    Windows 10 Pro
    Version    21H2

    Any clue ?
