Predator 15 laptop turning off randomly

Hi,

So this has happened to me a couple of times now - without warning, my Predator laptop will just...completely turn itself off. No error messages upon startup or before shut down, no other performance issues...it just turns off. I'm extremely concerned about this; I've had the laptop for a little over a year now with no prior issues. Can anyone offer any advice as to what I could do to fix this, or what might be causing it?

Please check event logs for kernel-power notifications. If so, you probably have a mainboard safety switch or battery reset switch that is being inadvertently triggered by putting pressure on the case while using the keyboard, keypad or other movement. The fix is usually simple but requires opening the case. Jack E/NJ

Sorry, but how do I check for kernel-power notifications? I'm not especially tech savvy and I'm not 100% confident when it comes to messing with these things.

Is there any way to fix this WITHOUT opening the laptop and tinkering with it? I've just looked at the pictures and I can't do something like that! That's really not what I would call a "simple" fix when I could potentially break the thing entirely...
  • What is the exact model of notebook? Example v3-571!

Open Control Panel. Search event. Click on event logs in left panel. Look for kernel-power notifications. If you see any and you don't feel comfortable opening the laptop than either arrange for ACER service if still under warranty or a local repair shop. Jack E/NJ

I have a notification. Is there any way to just disable the button so pressing it inadvertently does nothing? Unfortunately I am no longer under warranty, and with the cost of repairs at independent retailers I may as well buy a new laptop...
  • This seems to be the interlock button, see:

To solve this, try tightening these screws a bit more:

@egydiocoelho Doesn't look like the G9-592. However, the RAM compartment can be easily opened to see if the switch is there by removing two RAM door screws. The other possibility is the battery reset switch is being activitated which would probably require removal of the other screws. Jack E/NJ

New problem: now it won't play DVDs either. It's picking them up just fine but it whirrs something awful and VLC media player won't even open them. Have tried this with several DVDs with the same result each time. Could these two issues be related?

Are these writeable DVDs that you burned and haven't used in a while? Jack E/NJ

No, they're DVDs from a DVD box set.
  • Were you able to solve the shutdown problem? Can you tap a photo of the device manager to check if the dvd driver is in trouble?

I haven't had a random shutdown since Wednesday, but I've been extremely careful not to move the laptop whilst it's on - just using the keyboard doesn't trigger anything...at least not yet. Yesterday it was on the table all day.

The DVD driver is (apparently) working fine, and I DID manage to get it to play on reboot, but it sounded absolutely terrible when it was working and there was some stuttering initially. I checked the DVD on my PS4 to be sure and it was fine.

I've run sfc/scannow and it didn't come out with anything, I've not had anything pop up in scans, and the temperature isn't going above 70 degrees...usually not above 60 degrees. I'm going to try tightening the screws to see if that has any effect but at this point I'm not sure what is going on with it when the usual checks aren't showing up anything...and when this has all literally come out of nowhere. It was working fine last week and I've not done anything outside of Windows Updates.

It is definitely the DVD/CD player in the laptop - it starts stuttering after a few minutes and it stops playing the CD/DVD completely.

Open the DVD door. Blow air into the cavity to dislodge any dust that may have built up around the read/write laser diodes or sensors. The fact that you've been careful with not physically disturbing the machine with no random shutdowns is strongly suggestive of the battery reset or safety interlock buttons being the cause.
