Acer Aspire BIOS

I have an Acer Aspire 5750 notebook running Windows 7 Ultimate 64. I am unable to connect using the wireless circuitry. It can only connect using the wired Ethernet connection. It appears that the problem may be related to my BIOS. The version I have is 1.10. On the Acer support for my particular model laptop, the newest BIOS version is 1.21. There are a total of eleven different versions available between the one I have installed [1.10] and the latest [1.21]. None of the different versions have a description of solving the problem I am experiencing.

I have a Dell Latitude D600, running Windows XP Pro SP3 that has no problem connecting to my network via the wireless connection.

I attempted to troubleshoot the Acer Laptop by running Zorin OS 6 from a USB drive. It too is not able to connect to the network wireless but does connect through the Ethernet cable. This is why I am thinking the problem is BIOS related since that is the only thing in common when launching the two different operating systems and experiencing the same problem with connecting via the wireless on the Acer laptop.

I might add that in both attempts to connect wireless with the two different OS's, I also substituted a wireless USB adapter in lieu of using the internal wireless card [which is the Atheros AR5B97] and still cannot connect wireless. The USB wireless adapter I use can connect when it is placed in the Dell laptop so the wireless USB adapter is functioning OK. My belief is that the Atheros wireless card is not the problem and the registry for Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit is not the problem either. The only thing that is common to the different scenarios I have used has been the laptop BIOS.

I did not want to try and update the BIOS from version 1.10 to version 1.21 since I do not know what changes are made with version 1.21 and if I am required to update the BIOS sequentially from the current version of 1.10 through the eleven different version changes until I finally install version 1.21

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for replying.

I kinda figured that I would not get much help from this site. I was frustrated because the regular Acer help support would not clear me to ask the question about their BIOS since the laptop is no longer under warranty.

My frustration with Acer stems from the fact that they have a total of eleven variations or "upgrades" to the installed BIOS on their web site and some of the later variations do not have any description as to why they were created. My gut feeling is that I SHOULD NOT attempt to install these "upgrades" unless I have been specifically requested to do so. I also believe that they are not required to be sequentially installed but then, I could be wrong in my thinking.

I did, however, place the question in the Microsoft community site. An initial response came back with the usual montage of checking for all the obvious reasons why you cannot connect. I will reply to the responder with a portion of the information I am gathering to send to Cisco. I will include all of the narrative up to the specific information I retrieved from the WRT310 router setup data.

I honestly believe that the problem may be with the Linksys WRT310M router or at least a compatibility problem between the Acer and the Linksys.

I an preparing to submit a detailed report to Cisco support right now.

    Agan, thanks for replying.

    About the wireless issue.

    1)      Is the computer detecting the wireless network, if so when you click on connect does it give any error message?

    2)      Is the wireless network secured one? If so disable the wireless security and check if the laptop can connect. Sometimes the will be some compatibility issue with the security setting in the router and the wireless card.

About the BIOS updates listed in Acer website

As the updates doesn’t mention the purpose of their launch, they might add some additional function to the BIOS or fix a bug in the previous versions. As it is not mentioned we can only assume. There is no harm to update the BIOS to the latest version. As you have mentioned the website had BIOS update ranging from 1.10 to version 1.21, you need to install the latest one available as the latest one will cover all the updates of older version.

Yes, the computer is detecting the wireless network. It times out after I enter the secure passcode as if it had never been entered or that the roter never received the correct code.

    2)      Is the wireless network secured one? If so disable the wireless security and check if the laptop can connect. Sometimes the will be some compatibility issue with the security setting in the router and the wireless card.

I did reset the wireless router to unsecure and attempted to connect with no success. As I mentioned before, the wireless router is successfully connected to two different devices - a Dell Latitude D600 laptop and a Sony Smart TV via a Sony wireless adapter.

I do understand what you just said and I too can speculate that this is correct. However, having no assurances that the BIOS version 1.21 DOES in fact incorporate ALL of the previous changes and/or it corrects a wireless connectivity problem, I am reluctant to install this version to the laptop.
