Hi All, I'm new here. I'm having an issue with my laptop Acer Aspire 5542G.

Basically what happened is, I used my laptop and turned it off, and when I try to power on again (maybe after an hour or so) it is not starting. It’s not going into POST, or gives me any beeps. Screen is completely black. Only activity I here is DVD rom check and motherboard fan starting. I can see power on LED (blue) lights up and battery charging lights up (orange). Buts that’s it.

Before this issue, I didn’t upgrade BIOs or any hardware on the laptop. It was working flawlessly and never had any issues like sudden restart, freezing or blue screen. So since this issue started I have done following to get it sorted.

  1. I have removed and reseated the RAM cards at the back. I tried them each at a time in both slots. I have removed and reconnected the hard disk.
  2. I have remove RAM, Hard Disk (off course the battery as well) and left it to be over a day just to remove any charge left in it (also pressed and held the power button over a 1minute).
  3. I have connected the laptop to an external monitor to see any video output, nothing. As it doesn’t even go to post I wasn’t expecting to see anything anyway.
  4. I have formatted a USB stick (right click/format/quick format in Windows 7) and pasted latest DOS Bios files from Acer web site, and inserted into the USB port on the laptop and press and hold ‘fn’+’Esc’ and pressed power button. Nothing happened.

Only thing I haven’t done so far is getting into the CMOS Battery. I'm not sure how to do that, as it is not easily accessible. Need help please. Is my laptop done, or any chance we could get this going again? One last thing, Acer doesn’t list my laptop as compatible for Windows 10, but I recently upgraded to Windows 10 (about 4 months now) and never had any issues till now.

USB must formatted FAT32, you need to copy only the BIOS file and must be with renamed with .FD extension.

Have you renamed correctly the BIOS file on the USB?

was the USB flash drive FAT32 formatted?

Hi IronFly, could you please guide me through the steps of gettting the USB ready so I can confirm I have done everything correctly? I did not format with FAT32, only just FAT. I didn't make a bootable USB. Only formatted the USB with Windows and copied the DOS folder files directly on to it. Was this wrong?

Inside the DOS folder there are four files. FLASHIT.EXE, Projchk3.exe, XEWxx214.bat and XEWxx214.FD. Are you saying I only need the XEWxx214.FD? Do I still need to rename the file?

Are we talking about the same BIOS?

V1.09 is the latest and inside the DOS folder, the BIOS file is:

    JV50T109.wph

Thanks for the link, I think I had an older version downloaded from acer au website. Just to clarify, I'll format the USB stick with FAT32 using windows (right click-format) and copy the BIOS file which is JV50T109.wph and reaname it as JV50T109.FD (as in capital letters). I'll plug this into one of the USB ports on the laptop, press and hold 'fn'+'Esc' and press power button. Have I got this right? I'll let you know how I go.

Unfortunately my friend, this remedy is not working, I don’t think it even get to the point that motherboard can read the USB, I don’t see anything different when I press and hold ‘Fn’+’Esc’. I don’t see power button light blinking or the USB LED blinking. Is there any other key combinations we can try or is this pointless at this stage?

OK then, before I go ahead and buy a new motherboard, I'll try to replace the CMOS battery and see whether that is going to make any difference. I'll keep you informed as we go. Thanks for trying to help me so far.

Just to clarify mate, do I need to create a bootable USB for flashing BIOS, or just formatting it with FAT32 in Windows is enough? I’m getting mixed messages for different people. Some saying I should use something like ‘Rufus’ to create a proper bootable USB???

if you are using Fn+Esc + power button combo, you don't need a bootable USB flash drive but just a formatted FAT32 plus the xxx.FD file.
