uefi bios

Aspire s7-191 uefi bios problem.

I’ve searched the web and found this a common problem but so far not found a cure.

Notebook came with Win 8 installed through uefi bios, no password set.

I wanted to install Win 10 so made a bootable usb stick using the Win7 usb tool. On my uefi bios pc it installed without problem.

On the S7 I suffered the same problem as everyone else who tries to update their machines, uefi bios will not see any bootable device using f12 on boot. As well as Win 7 tool I also used Rufus with settings of ntfs and also fat-ex, uefi cannot see any of the drives. All are visible in legacy bios and work.

Step 2 back into bios select legacy bios secure boot disabled and hey presto f12 will display bootable device and OS installation is successful.

Step 3 reset bios to uefi and attempt to use an original Windows disk image. Impossible as the bios will not see bootable devices. Flip it back to legacy bios and you cannot use a previous disk image as it was made with the uefi in effect.

I really do not understand why Acer makes it so difficult for us to use our machines how we wish by locking everything down. I have had plenty of uefi pc’s and never had any problems like those encountered on Acer laptops.

Why oh why do you have to make us suffer so much, it is not necessary to do so, a laptop is a small pc using the same type components.

The general consensus on the net is to just use legacy bios but I think this a cop out. Has anyone on this site overcome this problem?

TIA for any replies.

  • Hi,

If youn are looking forward to upgrade the Current OS to Win 10 Tech Preview, you can boot to regular windows & initiate the Upgrade process,. or if wanted to do the same as a clean boot, Under BIOS, just change the Boot order from HDD to USB-HDD, have the BIOS to UEFI,. I have tried on my Acer & Works fine, with Win10TP,. Cheers

Hi, Thanks for the reply. when installing any OS I always disconnect all drives except the boot drive and do a custom install, removing any existing partitions inc the 300mb one so I always get a pristine install. I just remade my USB 3 thumb drive using Rufus set to NTFS and supporting legacy and UEFI bios, ISO of Win 8.1 My bios is set to legacy and recognised my Patriot thumb drive. I moved it up to No 1 boot device, reset bios to UEFI, saved changes. rebooted to bios to double check none of the settings had changed, they hadn't. I booted to F12 and no devices were displayed, just rebooting and letting the bios do it's own thing just gives the error message no bootable devices. If Acer can install Win 8 with the bios set to UEFI I should be able to do the same and not have to resort to using Legacy Bios. As I wrote previously the thumb drive works perfectly with my pc which has a Gigabyte UEFI bios, no need to revert to Legacy mode. Acer must have an answer to this problem which I've seen is common to a lot of Acer laptops not just the S7 series. BTW perhaps I should have stated that my bios is V2.09 I note there is now a V2.19 but after reading on this site the number of people that have had black screens after following Acers update program telling them to update their bios and receiving a faulty bios which necessitated their machines having to be returned for bios repair. I really don't want to update it if I can help it as the machine runs fine as it is.

I found this instruction and it works, I used the diskpart instructions as I had no success with Rufus. http://www.nextofwindows.com/how-to-make-uefi-bootable-usb-flash-drive-to-install-windows-8/ Acer get your lazy **** into gear and put up a faq using clear instructions like that web site. I wasted so much time it's not funny, thank you Acer.
