Acer TC-705 i7 CPU Fan is not spinning. Is it due to Graphics Card which is faulty that's causing?

    Dear Larryodie,

Thank you again for writing back. I will be getting my TC-705 i7-4790 computer back tomorrow evening and I will see what kind of fan the technician has kindly fitted for me. I was thinking that if the Noctua fans are very quiet, I could replace the one that is now in the machine whatever that may be, if necessary.

I asked StevenGen about just purchasing the fan itself i.e. not the CPU heatsink metal structure beneath it.

    I'll know more tomorrow evening.

First measure the diameter of the existing TC-705 cpu fan as it should be at around 92mm diameter, then go to the Noctua site and see their range of FANS and chose a 92mm fan with the 4 pin plug ONLY as that is the appropriate cpu fan for your TC-705 that was fitted by Acer.

What I suggest is this, buy the model NF-B9 redux-1600 PWM that is a 4 pin that is the same as your default cpu oem fan and its max noise output is 17.1 dB(A), which is a very quite and this fan extracts a max of 63 m³/h of air per hour to keep the cpu cool.

Noctua NF-B9 redux-1600 PWM fan, search for this fan on eBay or Amazon as they are at a reasonable price and very easy to install on top of the TC-705 oem aluminum thermal module.

    Dear Members,

Thank you again for your advice and suggestions. Last night, I got my Acer TC-705 i7-4790 back and the machine is working well with a brand new Win10 OS to which I have already added 16 programmes onto the OS partition (C: Drive) with more to do tonight. The D: Drive (partition) still contains all my previous data as before (undisturbed).

The spare fan that the technician used did not have aligned screw holes and so he merely lodged it between some rubber grommets he'd fitted and in fact it fell out when I took the side case panel off!

I couldn't measure the old fan as the technician forgot to bring it over but I will get hold of it together with its 4 screws later.

In the meantime, following StevenGen's kind suggestion, I have today ordered via Amazon UK the Noctua Fan model no. NF-B9 redux-1600 PWM costing £11-95.

As mentioned previously, I have not taken up the option of a 1Tb SSD as yet.

I am very glad to get my TC-705 back again and working!

You will find that the SSD will make a huge difference in overall system performance over the existing HDD. You are not limited in size on the SSD to 1TB, any size you can afford will work great. What you will find, however, with your machine is that the newest SSDs are not in a form factor that will work with your motherboard, so the NVMe type drives are out. Get a normal 2.5" SATA SSD and if needed a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter. Clone the HDD to the SSD, then enable the boot menu in your BIOS and use that to choose the SSD as your boot device. Once you are booted on the new SSD and you are assured everything is working, you can wipe the HDD and use it for data storage and backups.

    Dear Billsey,

    Thanks very much for writing.

Re: The SSD option: Perhaps the Kingston KC600 2.5" SSD at either 1Tb or 2Tb would be accepted by the TC-705 i7-4790. The Kingston SSD is shown on a website for MrMemory.co.uk and there is a note saying "you may also require a bracket or installation kit".

I don't know what NVMe is?

I presume that a 2Tb SSD can be partitioned into two halves (as usual as with regular internal hard drives). I wouldn't need to do any attempted cloning etc. however.

What I would wish to do, if ever upgrading to an SSD system, would be to ask the technician to install a fresh OS Win11 on the SSD and then I can myself install my usual 30 or more programmes (which is something that I am able to do without help and takes me about 3 days after digging out all the master discs & licence nos.) and thus, I would leave my existing setup as it is but simply require the Acer's booting to be from the new SSD Win11 rather than as before using the "C: Partition" half of my existing 2Tb WD Green internal hard drive running Win10.

BACK-UP/EMERGENCY START-UP DVD: Please can you possibly guide me to where I can see about how to create a Start-up DVD just to be used when the Acer refuses to start up normally into a desktop display screen? I presume that if such a disc can be used to get into the system and display as usual then repairs can be made to try to resurrect the C: Drive.

Also, I had an idea that modern Win10 systems have a back-up area when new machines are purchased from shops? Do I have this based on my Win10 installation that the technician did using my own purchased Win10 disc last week, I wonder?

When my system went wrong a few weeks ago, I got the "repairing" message for some 7 hours and then finally stating that my system cannot be repaired! Perhaps a dedicated start-up disc is able to get the computer going despite or instead of this disappointing message?

    Many thanks again, Victor.

Here is the WIN11 "Create a disk"

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

Since your System does not qualify for a WIN11 installation, I would highly advise to put this one to rest, spend NO more . Put the money into a new computer. You'll never regret the awesome speed on a newer computer .

    Dear Larryodie,

Thank you very much for writing more. I have now installed 37 programmes onto my freshly created Win10 C: Drive within my WD Green 2Tb internal SATA drive and so far so good.

You kindly provided above a link "Download Windows 11 create a disk" but please can you give me similar for "Windows 10" since I am not using Win11.

I appreciate that my TC-705 i7-4790 is an older model but to me it is very new as I otherwise mainly use WinXP SP3 on an Acer Veriton 7700GX [where my tens of thousands of Outlook Express 6 (OE6) e-mails & attachments are stored] and, until I got the TC-705, Win7 on an even older Acer Veriton 7600GT. I have to keep WinXP SP3 going because of my e-mails. For me OE6 is superior to Outlook, GMail, etc because of the formatting and addresses facilities available. However, WinXP with Firefox is not able to access many modern websites whereas Win7 still can.

I am not sure what is meant about my system not qualifying for a Win11 installation as the technician had suggested giving me Win11 on an 256Gb SSD which I declined as the SSD is too small and I wanted to try to get my WD Green drive working again for the time being. Another reason to use the TC-705 is that it is quite small and not too heavy (compared to the two old Veriton desktops) and also it has a CD/DVD drawer. I have many CDs and some Dvds with over 40 programmes on them plus I have saved hundreds of songs from off my many music CDs and made them available transferred onto two Asus Zenpads (7 & 8) that I have. I suspect that most newer desktops don't have these disc drawers. The old Veritons of course even have "A" Drives and indeed the first programme I ever purchased from Holland in October 1999 called "Disk Piecharter" by Hans Zorn came on a diskette.

You'll be OK until Oct 25 2025 with WIN 10 and if you don't go online or go to unsecure websites then you MAY be OK. Don't change.

I didn't mean to throw away your old computer, but buy a new one to enjoy the new speeds instead of pouring more money into an old computer . Computers are like us, they get old too and can be a moneypit thus more repair dollars.

I've never got anywhere with Firefox either but love Google Chrome. I'm running one computer on a 256 GB SSD with no problem. WIN 11 has been OK and free. I play lots of poker via Zynga with no problems after I got rid of Firefox.

    Dear Larryodie,

Thank you very much for writing back. I looked at the information that you kindly sent me. This seems to be for installing Windows afresh whereas what I meant is merely a "start-up" Dvd disc so that I can start the computer when it refuses to come on normally and then try to make repairs. I seem to remember making one in the days of Win98 using the "A" drive (diskette slot).

It does have an option to keep your data and not format But you can do the same by doing a restore as in my link if you have corrupt files or something ain't working correctly.

You can burn it to a dvd . This is made if you have a blank hard drive and want to create Windows for the 1st time.

But you can use it for repair to with the option "not to format" and keep your data.

If your system is working and you are trying to get rid a bug or two, like no audio or date,. Just do a restore from your RUN command https://www.howtogeek.com/220/use-system-restore-on-windows/

You can do system backups to using my link to "How to Use System Restore on Win 10 & Win11" You can do it to a DVD or AS I do to an external USB drive."

Good luck, just remember to never answer YES to "Do you want to Format"

Thank you Larryodie. I find the procedure a bit difficult to understand however I have seen an article with a lot of pictures which I might be able to understand better. The article is "How to Create a Recovery Disk" co-authored by Spike Baron & Nicole Levine in February 2025. The URL is at: https://www.wikihow.com/Create-a-Recovery-Disk

Since Monday night when I got my Acer TC-705 i7-4790 computer back, I have now added 47 programmes to my C: Drive but in doing so, I lately seem to have disturbed the system tray at the bottom of my Dell monitor screen in so much as the yellow folder icon at the bottom no longer brings up the usual drives information. Instead I now get a message when double-clicking the icon saying:

"This file does not have an apps associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Defaults Apps Settings page."

I have no idea what this means or what I need to do? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you again, Victor 15th May 7.11pm (London, UK)

Can you BOOT into safe mode on your WIN 10 machine with ALT F10 ??

You do not want to restore to an earlier point as you'll lose the files that you just added.

DO NOT chose format unless you may can backup your data files. You just want to the recovery option to get rid of the message.

Acer has a recovery USB that you can buy from them.

You may have to download the create a disk that I posted and just answer no to deleting your data unless you have a restore disk ???

You can just type recovery in your run menu too and follow the directions as not to wipe out your data files.

You'll need all licensing data to give to Microsoft.

TRY HOLDING THE SHIFT KEY WHILE RESTARTING YOUR COMPUTER.

This will get you into safe mode and then click on TROUBLESHOOT for OPTIONS.

    Thanks Larryodie,

I checked out the wikiHow procedure but it does not appear the same when I try for a DVD disc..

I am afraid that I simply don't understand what I am supposed to do to create a start-up disc (DVD) so I am giving up on that for the time being before I ruin my computer again!

I would however like to know about making an "association" in accordance with the message:

"This file does not have an apps associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Defaults Apps Settings page."

Hold the SHIFT KEY while restarting, will get you to Safe Mode and troubleshoot.

Or just IGNORE the message if all is running OK.

Go to your control panel and go to back-up (under system security) and follow instructions to create a start up disk.

Thanks very much Larryodie. I will try to do what you kindly suggest above.

I am also interested in what you wrote: "Acer has a recovery USB that you can buy from them."

Can you please point me to where I can buy this please? I live in West London, UK. A local friend has a Prime A/C with Amazon so he could get it for me postage-free I expect (I ordered the Noctua Fan that StevenGen recommended that way the other day). I was told by the first (NW London) engineer that ACER are in Poland.

Part of a Belarc information scan is as per the attached .jpg file showing the version of Win10 that is currently installed in my Acer TC-705 i7-4790.

    Dear StevenGen,

Today my Noctua Fan NF-B9 redux- 1600 PWM arrived via Amazon. Unfortunately it is not the correct fit for my Acer TC-705 i7-4790. The measurement of the Noctua is 92 x 92 x 25mm and the screw holes distance is wider than the sockets in the heatsink below.

The technician who kindly fitted another kind of fan (Lanshuo DC 12V 0.17Amps 0.2W) to get me going again had kept my old Acer fan so I didn't know the exact size of it and I asked him to return it to me together with the original screws. I just got a message from him via e-mail that the measurement that would fit "would be an 80mm fan".

In any event, I placed the Noctua Fan inside the Acer by wedging it in between grommets that the technician had ingeniously fitted and I think it is a bit quieter than the Lanshuo Fan so I will keep it anyway.

What I was very surprised to see was the 4 screws supplied with the Noctua were only about half an inch in length which is less than the gap between the double holes in the fan so how on earth are you to fit it as the screw will be in the air?

When I get back my faulty fan and hopefully the original screws from the technician, I can look at this again. In the meantime please could you check to see if there is an 80 mm fan to fit my Acer because it did not turn out to be a 92mm fan as thought.

Many thanks, Victor Friday 16th May 2025 8.19pm

    Dear Larryodie,

Thank you again for the suggestions re. making an emergency start-up disc. I just, I think, successfully made a Dvd for a "System Repair Disc Win10" using the option from the Control Panel for a DVD that you kindly referred me to. In the picture that you sent, I noticed that the Backup and Restore option has (Windows 7) stated after the wording but it seems to have worked on my Win10.

The explorer contents of this "System Repair Disc Win10" are as per the attached picture (.jpg file).

There was another option requiring 90Gb to make an image but I wasn't quite sure about that. It seemed to be wanting to save onto my D: Drive partition but I don't want to upset that drive as it has survived undisturbed despite having a new C: Drive partition installed plus my added 47 programmes.

I presume that in the event of my Acer TC-705 i7-4790 refusing to start up, I alter the Bios to allow the Dvd to be the first boot option and if all goes well, my Win10 will come on and then be available for possible repairs, etc.

Yes, it is still WIN 7 but it works.

I have it scheduled to update weekly to an external USB hard drive.

    You'll need the correct re-writeable dvd's

Boot Enable needs to ENABLED in your bios then reboot with tapping F12 to change your boot order.
