Acer TC-705 i7 CPU Fan is not spinning. Is it due to Graphics Card which is faulty that's causing?

    Dear Larryodie,

In summary, the COOLER MASTER fan is readily available on the Web, we can see. You'll recall that the problem with the old fan was that it stopped spinning. The first engineer in NW London diagnosed that the Radeon R7-240 Graphics Card was faulty and preventing the fan from working. I paid the first engineer £35 and he wanted another £99 plus £40 odd for a new R7-240 card and checking it all out. Luckily, I retrieved my Acer from him and later a friend of a friend discovered that the original's fan coils were not working properly and he fitted a temporary Lanshuo fan by wedging it in between some grommets. I then purchased the Noctua which StevenGen thought was compatible with the Acer. Unfortunately, whilst this fan is very quiet at only 17.6dB(A), the screw holes are not compatible so again, it is merely wedged in by the grommets.

NB. Although Acer themselves used the R7-240 Graphics Card, there are several comments on the Web that this card requires a 400w or more PSU!

I am tempted to simply super-glue the Noctua fan in but this would cause problems if it also later goes wrong. Sdroid used cable-ties to attach his non-compatible fan and filed off part of the corner of his fan. I don't want to try anything like that myself.

So far, I cannot find any compatible-fitting fan in the UK which is superior to the COOLER MASTER 21 - 29dB(A). I have really gone off this fan however the situation seems hopeless and one is compelled to use the COOLER MASTER which is a lower quality compared to the Noctua Fan (which doesn't fit). Maybe there could be an adaptor but again there is no information as to the holes spacing.

Some refer to 80mm fans but nothing on the COOLER MASTER measures 80mm!

As to measurements, no manufacturer seems to give the key details of the spacing of the 4 or 8 holes relevant to where the screws go in. Dimensions are given of the whole body of the fan and sometimes these are not accurate either and these do not help me check compatibilty with the Acer's heatsink.

Trying to sort this out remotely without hands-on inspection of the various fans is difficult for me.

Dear Larryodie, further to my last posting above, I have written to NOCTUA Technical Support in Austria asking about three of the fans shown below (NF-A8 PWM, NF-R8 redux-1800 PWM and NF-A8 PWM chromax.black.swap). Noctua have acknowledged my e-mail about my wish for a better quality (presumed 80mm) fan than the COOLER MASTER and one that actually aligns with the screw holes of the metal heatsink. The middle one NF-R8 redux-1800 PWM seems closest to my larger B9 Noctua (which is 1600 RMP) and is only 17.1dB(A). Regards, Victor 1.50pm London UK 21st May 2025

Most likely a drop of light machine oil into the bearing would fixed your old fan. But just a drop, it may have a screw on it, sometimes this is the oil hole,

In my television repair 45 Years), I repaired many of noisy /stalling fan with a drop of machine oil or Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) as sometimes an replacement wasn't available or the customer was pushing me for no further delay. To verify if the bearing is bad, rotated/spin it by hand (unplugged) and you'll hear the dry bearing.

As sometimes they were obsolete, in your case, replacement fans are available ???

As I can no longer help you in your pursuit for a "Silent Fan" and something different ? I'll check in, often to see your progress. Good Luck.

Many thanks to all once again. If I ever obtain a correctly-fitting fan which is superior to the original COOLER MASTER in quality i.e. lower dB(A), I will let you know. Best wishes from sunny London, Victor. 21st May 2025 4.09pm.

CORRECTION: I am sorry but I gave a wrong measurement in my posting of 20th May at 9.25pm.

The correct measurement from mid-hole to mid-hole horizontally of the fixing base holes (next to the heatsink) is 72mm but the longer measurement is also 72mm (not 105mm that I typed). The width of the fan body is 80mm likewise the height. Sorry for that. I mistakenly measured a diagonal distance. Victor 21/5/2025 8.01pm.

    UPDATE:

Dear Members who have very kindly been helping me,

Yesterday the new Noctua Fan arrived from Quiet PC. This square shaped fan has approx 72mm mid-holes distance. The holes are in a double layer (actually intended to be Case Fans not CPU Fans hence the thick screws in the box - which had puzzled me when I got the previous larger size fan). The new fan full details are:

    NOCTUA NF-R8 redux- 1800PWM, 4-pin PWM, 80 x 80 x25mm. Airflow 53.5 m3/h, 17.1 dB/A, Input power 12v, 0.72W/ 0.06A. Below are two photos of the 80mm fan.

    P1100872red.jpg P1100873red.jpg

The fitting of the new fan was a bit awkward as I have used the lower layer set of 4 holes with the original screws that held in the faulty Coooler Master Fan. It took me many attempts to get the screws into position and then find a very narrow screwdriver to screw down the fan. The upper holes are unused (a different approach to SDroid's more drastic method).

While I had the Acer open, I noticed that although it has a case fan pattern of holes in the rear panel, there does not appear to be any 4-pin socket on the motherboard to which any case fan could be connected up!

Below is a SPECCY readout after I fitted the new fan. I see that the fan speed is 1,923 RPM. I haven't looked at the BIOS as yet - I don't want to spoil things again! The average temperature is 33 degrees centigrade - slightly lower than my previous SPECCY reading.

MEMORY: My installed Memory is 12Gb (8Gb + 4Gb) - is it worthwhile changing the 4Gb into another 8Gb? If so, can someone please let me know the exact make and type of Memory and if possible a reliable supplier link in the UK please.

Finally, below is a photo of the result of all our joint efforts with the new and very quiet 80mm Noctua Fan firmly in position.

    Looks good.

I'm wondering if you got Speccy to run full time ?

    ALWAYS atop the screen ??
