Most likely a drop of light machine oil into the bearing would fixed your old fan. But just a drop, it may have a screw on it, sometimes this is the oil hole,

In my television repair 45 Years), I repaired many of noisy /stalling fan with a drop of machine oil or Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) as sometimes an replacement wasn't available or the customer was pushing me for no further delay. To verify if the bearing is bad, rotated/spin it by hand (unplugged) and you'll hear the dry bearing.

As sometimes they were obsolete, in your case, replacement fans are available ???

As I can no longer help you in your pursuit for a "Silent Fan" and something different ? I'll check in, often to see your progress. Good Luck.

Many thanks to all once again. If I ever obtain a correctly-fitting fan which is superior to the original COOLER MASTER in quality i.e. lower dB(A), I will let you know. Best wishes from sunny London, Victor. 21st May 2025 4.09pm.

CORRECTION: I am sorry but I gave a wrong measurement in my posting of 20th May at 9.25pm.

The correct measurement from mid-hole to mid-hole horizontally of the fixing base holes (next to the heatsink) is 72mm but the longer measurement is also 72mm (not 105mm that I typed). The width of the fan body is 80mm likewise the height. Sorry for that. I mistakenly measured a diagonal distance. Victor 21/5/2025 8.01pm.

    UPDATE:

Dear Members who have very kindly been helping me,

Yesterday the new Noctua Fan arrived from Quiet PC. This square shaped fan has approx 72mm mid-holes distance. The holes are in a double layer (actually intended to be Case Fans not CPU Fans hence the thick screws in the box - which had puzzled me when I got the previous larger size fan). The new fan full details are:

    NOCTUA NF-R8 redux- 1800PWM, 4-pin PWM, 80 x 80 x25mm. Airflow 53.5 m3/h, 17.1 dB/A, Input power 12v, 0.72W/ 0.06A. Below are two photos of the 80mm fan.

    P1100872red.jpg P1100873red.jpg

The fitting of the new fan was a bit awkward as I have used the lower layer set of 4 holes with the original screws that held in the faulty Coooler Master Fan. It took me many attempts to get the screws into position and then find a very narrow screwdriver to screw down the fan. The upper holes are unused (a different approach to SDroid's more drastic method).

While I had the Acer open, I noticed that although it has a case fan pattern of holes in the rear panel, there does not appear to be any 4-pin socket on the motherboard to which any case fan could be connected up!

Below is a SPECCY readout after I fitted the new fan. I see that the fan speed is 1,923 RPM. I haven't looked at the BIOS as yet - I don't want to spoil things again! The average temperature is 33 degrees centigrade - slightly lower than my previous SPECCY reading.

MEMORY: My installed Memory is 12Gb (8Gb + 4Gb) - is it worthwhile changing the 4Gb into another 8Gb? If so, can someone please let me know the exact make and type of Memory and if possible a reliable supplier link in the UK please.

Finally, below is a photo of the result of all our joint efforts with the new and very quiet 80mm Noctua Fan firmly in position.

    Looks good.

I'm wondering if you got Speccy to run full time ?

    ALWAYS atop the screen ??

    Dear Larryodie,

My "SPECCY" programme, which you kindly tipped me off about, is version 1.33.075

I am not sure exactly what you mean about it formerly being "Always atop the screen" on your computer?

    Please explain further.

I would be glad to hear from members about my 8Gb Memory Ram question if possible so that I order the right make etc. As I also wrote above, it's strange that whilst Acer provide the grill for a Case Fan to be fitted to expel warm air, there is no connection socket that I can see nearby? In any event, I have placed a large living-room Panasonic Fan generally blowing air on my old Win XP and also the TC-705 under the table (my computers are on the floor but raised off the carpet).

    Query to Moderator:

    Dear Sir,

I was puzzled to just now receive a warning not to publish other people's full names & serial numbers, etc in a posting today?

I am not sure where I have actually done so? Has a breach of Data Protection taken place?

Yours sincerely, Victor 29th May 2025.

    Dear Larryodie, Members,

Re. my additional Memory Ram query: I didn't hear anything from members as yet but in the meantime, I did find some helpful information from a "Mr Memory" website and hoping for the best, I have since ordered an 8Gb Memory Ram stick type "Acer Aspire Desktop TC-705 Compatible Upgrade 8Gb DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz 240-pin DIMM".

The price was very reasonable £10 + £2 Value Added Tax (VAT) and free delivery by post.

I have one other question, if I may - I understand that the TC-205 i7-4790 is capable of running a new SSD Drive say 1Tb in size. But please where is this actually connected to the motherboard? (a photo?).

Many thanks, Victor 30th May 2025 12.48pm (London, UK)

    This post may help.

I think the size is unlimited

I'm assuming that you don't have a slot for a SSD card on your motherboard ??/ If not then this post should be enough along with the cable.

    Dear Larryodie,

I believe that the Acer TC-705 i7- 4790 does indeed have a direct connection to the new SSD type of hard drive. There was one machine in Gravesend that I attempted to buy about a month ago and the seller had upgraded the graphics card and installed an SSD hard drive and I was going to purchase that while my original Acer was being repaired. As you may recall the first engineer in Golders Green gave me the wrong infromation and I would have wasted over £200 if I had followed his advice!

You need to take a picture as the specs that I see , says it has a 512 SSD. Are you trying to update it to a 1TB ?, if so why ?

I'm lost as what to you blaming other people ? Please move on (forward).

    Dear Larryodie,

As far as I know, a new SSD can be fitted directly to the Acer TC-705 i7-4790 but I never found a dedicated users manual for my model hence I was enquiring on your Forum hoping that a few members might still own a TC-705 i7-4790 and could tell me.

You may recall that you correctly expressed doubt over the finding of the NW London engineer who I paid £35 to for a diagnosis and who informed me that my Graphics Card was preventing the CPU Fan from spinning.

In the event, I took back my computer having found a friend of a friend who is a University Computer technician here in the UK. It was that technician who correctly diagnosed the non-spinning fan issue as being a fault in the original Cooler Master Fan itself. If I had left the matter in the hands of the NW London engineer, I would be out of pocket in the amount of £200 odd [(including train fares for a friend who would carry the machine for me as both of my hands have weight-carrying problems and the cost of a new (not needed) £40 odd Graphics Card R7-240 plus £99-00 fee for fitting and checking it].

Encouraged by Sdroid's efforts with a Noctua Fan, I then went about finding a quiet fan by the Noctua manufacturer kindly recommended by StevenGen The first one I purchased was one size too large but the second one (80 x 80 x 25mm) was perfect and despite it really being a Case Fan, it works very nicely as you could see from the SPECCY screenshot I took after installation. As mentioned in an earlier posting, the computer has the metal rear panel holes with a case fan facility but I cannot see where one can be plugged in. On my ancient Acer Veriton 7700GX which I use daily as it allows me to access over 100,000 e-mails & attachments in Outlook Express 6, I notice that there are 2 separate connection sockets for fans. The TC-705 i7-4790 inventors seem to have omitted this?

Thank you again for your (and other members) kind assistance.

I'm sorry but no one on this forum can help you with your past local problems. I personally get a headache when reading it.

But if you could tell us as what Hard drive's are installed on your machines then possibly someone can help.

WHAT DOES THE DEVICE MANAGER LIST UNDER HARD DRIVES.

The Aspire TC-705 desktop does not have provisions for an M.2 SSD drive. this desktops drives are of a SATA III drives slots and can accommodate two of either 3.5" or 2,5" SSD drives or mechanical drives. The only way to upgrade to an M.2 SSD drive is to use this desktops PCI Express x16 Gen 3 slot which has a max speed of 8 GB/s, read this guide of which PCIe Generation you can use with this slot with an M.2 NGFF M Key SSD to NVMe PCI Express PCI-E 3.0 Adapter. Good luck and hope this helps you out further.

This is the Mainboard Layout of the TC-705 desktop.

Thank you very much for the latest two above postings.

Firstly, in answer to Larryodie's question, on my TC-705 i7-4790, I am currently running a single internal hard 3.5" drive Western Digital (WD) Green 2Tb. This Drive is partitioned into two parts, (1) my C: Drive (with Win10 and programmes installed) and (2) my D: Drive (data, My Documents, etc). I also have a spare 2Tb Drive (not used) also partitioned but otherwise empty. Since a critical comment on the Web about the TC-705 i7-4790 having only a 300W PSU and the Radeon R7-240 graphics card installed by Acer requiring 400w or more!, I did not attempt to add the second WD Drive as yet.

*The fixing screws are longer than usual and I am not sure how to obtain these if I did want to fit the second WD Green hard drive later on.

Secondly, thank you very much StevenGen for settling the question whether I could directly fit a new SSD 1Tb to the Acer motherboard or not. It seems that the only way to do so is via use of the graphics card slot which is obviously a non-starter for my setup!

However, what do you make of the Gravesend-based computer enthusiast who has written on the Web (E-Bay) when recently selling his TC-705 i7-4790 that he had carried out two upgrades being (1) a better graphics card and (2) a modern SSD? One wonders how he did this as he says that he is using a graphics card?

Having fitted the very quiet Noctua make of fan that you kindly referred me to, I am now wondering if I could improve the noisy fan with my old Acer Veriton 7700GX (my main working computer with over 100,000 e-mails & their attachments saved on the C: Drive). I tried fitting a resistor cable in line with the SUNON's PMD1208PKV1 DC 12v 3,7w 3-pin fan plug but that is too drastic as it turns off the fan altogether soon after start-up! On this old Acer, I have not been able to get into the BIOS for quite a long time. Another problem.

Thank you again for your assistance.

Regards from sunny London, Victor Sunday 1st June 2025 1.55pm.

The new Memory stick (8Gb) was fitted this evening and it shows up in the SPECCY reading attached.

This also shows my single internal hard drive (WD 2Tb 3.5"). As StevenGen checked, there is no SSD direct connection with the Graphics Card in situ. The Gravesend seller's statement is a puzzle?

I have now with lots of help had a new very quiet Noctua Fan installed solving my original enquiry as to why my CPU fan (Cooler Master) stopped spinning plus I have the increased Memory (I believe the maximum I can have in the TC-705 i7-4790).

I think that I have done all I can with my TC-705 to moderately improve it. Thanks again for all the help and suggestions.

    Regards, Victor 2nd June 2025.

PS. I heard from Noctua in Austria by e-mail and they very kindly offered to look into my other query re. the Acer Veriton 7700GX (WinXP & Outlook Express 6) where the CPU Fan is very noisy at times (whining noise) but is very awkwardly positioned. I found one picture of the existing CPU Fan, the Sunon PMD1208PKV1, DC 12v 3.7w on a site in Singapore but if changing it, I would try to find a Noctua to use. I expect it would need plastic surgery though and I am not as brave as Sdroid!
