Hi,

After the news that microsoft is stopping support for windows 10 in October, I'm considering doing the free upgrade to 11 that came with my pc. I've got a couple of concerns and wondered if anyone can advise.

1.If i do the upgrade will it affect my peripherals like printer, Thrustmaster joystick and throttle and Xbox controller.

2. I have steam on my desktop and have a few games i play. Would it have any effect on them.

3. I also have a couple of external hard drives attached. Again would that effect anything on them.

I've already checked and I'm ready to upgrade but wanted to double check as I'm no way a computer expert.

Thank you for any assistance.

Cheers.

To upgrade your Acer device to Windows 11, check for updates in Windows Update, ensuring your device meets the minimum system requirements, and then follow the instructions provided by Microsoft

Before you make any changes on your computer make sure you make a USB recovery media so that you can restore your device to factory settings if anything goes wrong. Create Acer Recovery media

Microsoft offers free downloads that are available free of charge. I have attached a link below on how to access this software. Your Acer laptop came with a pre-installed Windows 11 OEM license, a direct download of Windows 11 from Microsoft should automatically activate with that license, as it's stored on the motherboard. Windows 11 Installation Assistant , Acer Drivers & Download, Windows 11 FAQ

You may need to update and sync all your software to work on windows 11.
After upgrade to windows 11, you may update and sync the settings of your peripherals like printer, Thrustmaster joystick and throttle and Xbox controller and it should be fine..
Steam and its games are generally compatible with Windows 11, and many users have reported no issues after upgrading. Some older games might require compatibility tweaks or updates to run optimally on Windows 11. It shouldn't directly affect your external hard drives or the data stored on them, but it's always a good idea to keep them disconnected when you perform a any major OS changes. After the upgrade, verify that your external hard drives are still recognized by Windows 11. You can check in Disk Management or File Explorer.

    Good luck!

It is best to disconnect all peripherals during upgrade since windows may auto detect and may case any driver issues.

After you complete the upgrade, you may connect the peripherals one by one and windows should will detect it automatically and install the required drivers or you may check the manufacturer website for windows 11 drivers.

    Hope the best!

In addition to the above, if you plan to upgrade to Windows11 24H2 make sure that your processor meets the minimum requirement otherwise install Windows 23H2. https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-removes-windows-11-24h2-official-support-on-8th-9th-10th-gen-intel-cpus/

    Hi,

Thank you all for the helpful advice.

I've created a recovery usb and checked i've met the minimum requirements and i hope i'm ready to do it.

Just to clarify something. i know it says to remove the external drive but can i still leave the printer, xbox controller. joystick and throttle connected. Or is it best to disconnect all peripherals.

    Thanks again,

    Cheers,
