Why is the Video not switching back to laptop screen on PH18-72 when HDMI disconnected

Hey all,

I have a 2024 Acer Helios Predator 18 (PH18-72) w/4090m which I connect to my TV via HDMI when playing games. In that mode, I switch video output to second screen only as there's no need for the laptop LCD to be on. The problem arises if I happen to incorrectly set an unsupported (by TV) screen resolution/refresh rate in the game or if I disconnect the HDMI cable. In those situations the screen on the TV goes blank and the video does not switch to the laptop like it does on every laptop that I've ever used. So I'm left with a system that I have to hard-reboot by holding down the power button for 15 seconds. I did a fresh install of Win11 when I got the laptop so I'm wondering if I missed a driver or setting somewhere.

Things I've tried:

  1. Fresh Nvidia graphics drivers re-install
  2. OS is up-to-date
  3. Switching to Nvidia only in BIOS (from automatic)
  4. Disconnecting/reconnecting power when this happens
    1. It seems the laptop stays in the same power mode because the keyboard color does not change to green (my eco/balanced-mode setting)
  5. Disconnecting/reconnecting the HDMI cable from the laptop
  6. Trying Fn-F8 to switch back to single screen mode

Anyone know what might be going on or how to fix this?

Turned out that this is an nVidia driver issue. Credit goes to yaj00j https://www.reddit.com/user/yaj00j/ on Reddit for making me aware. Once I applied the hotfix, driver 572.65 which can be found here: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5631/~/geforce-hotfix-driver-version-572.65 disconnecting the HDMI cable results in the video moving to the laptop screen automatically, which is consistent with normal behavior.

Try to update the BIOS to see if that helps.

I'm on the latest 1.10… will add to the OP.

    …apparently I cannot modify the OP. :/

That is how this works when connecting to a TV, as your TV might trigger the gpu to turn off when you disconnect the PH18-72 from the TV and the HDMI cable, as the laptop doesn’t reset automatically, that is how things are, as you will need to do a reset every time. Buy an external monitor as the PH18-72 will work allot better with a proper external monitor then a TV. Good luck.

Respectfully disagree… I just tried it with 2 other laptops I have (an old personal one and my work laptop) - set to external display only when connected to the TV. Disconnected the HDMI cable and both laptop screens turned on.

You can’t compare any laptop model or expect them to perform in the same way, they are all designed differently and some are restricted with their design in a HDMI connection mode, yes some older laptops might be similar but these new laptops have a totally different design and are much more complex in their circuitry and mobo designs and filters, that restrict the laptop from having their gpu bricked by a short a power surge etc etc hence and why you need to reset the laptop. Good luck.
