Hi

I went into the bios to try and ask it to recognise another HD

Didn't work

Put the old one back and tried to install Win 11 - the Install can't find the M.2 now

I have asked it to return the BIOS to Default settings to no avail

It is bios version R01-A3 and secure boot is on etc

Any advice appreciated !!

I booted the M.2 drive in another computer successfully when I changed the BIOS to AHCI

There doesn't seem to be any AHCI setting on the XC-1780

    Anyone ?

Have you removed the other hard drives until the new one is recognized ?

You may have to do a CTRL-S to change to AHCI.

New to me but AI Perplexity says.

To switch from SATA to AHCI mode on an Acer Aspire XC-1780, follow these steps:

    1. Enter the BIOS by pressing F2 during boot14.
    2. Navigate to the MAIN tab in the BIOS14.
    3. Press CTRL+S to reveal hidden options, including the SATA Mode setting.
    4. Look for SATA Mode and change it from RST with Optane (or RAID) to AHCI.
    5. Press F10 to save the changes and exit the BIOS.

However, changing from RAID/RST to AHCI mode may cause Windows to fail to boot. To prevent this, perform these additional steps before changing the BIOS settings:

    1. Boot into Windows normally.
    2. Press Windows Key + R, type "msconfig" and press Enter.
    3. Go to the Boot tab and enable Safe Boot.
    4. Click OK and restart your computer

After completing these steps, enter the BIOS and change the SATA mode to AHCI as described above. Windows will then boot into Safe Mode, automatically install the necessary AHCI drivers, and should be able to boot normally on the next restart

Remember to back up your important data before making any changes to your

    Yep

    Ctrl S revealed a line:

    VMD Controller

Switched off VMD and it resorted to AHCI

Why is life so complicated !!
