Failed BIOS update

Good evening, dear fellows using Acer computers and laptops.

I have come around with a pretty serious issue I've encountered a few hours ago (yes, indeed I struggled to do something but in this point, my knowledge in matter of BIOS is not enough).

For the beginning, I own an Acer 5252 laptop.

Since my wireless was disconnecting and reconnecting endlessly, I've reinstalled all the drivers that could face the problem, from the chipset to the ethernet controller. Nothing worked, obviously, perhaps I'm that unlucky person but, in the end, I decided to update the BIOS as well with the faith that something's going to happen. In the middle of the flashing process, my powersource stopped working (my battery has been resting in pieces since 2013, may) and it restarted. At that point, nothing happened. Nothing showed up anymore on the monitor, nothing seemed to be processed at all. Now, when I'm trying to open it, I can hear the cooler for like 20 seconds then it stops and that's it.

I suppose there's not a BIOS to boot from anymore so I'm asking for your advices to recover it without paying for tech support at the nearby service, s'il vous plait.

Here are some ideas I've had and tried without success:

1. Plug off the computer for a while from the powersource and try again (it does the same, unfortunately)

2. Press a few buttons on the keyboard (FN and F2, I think, seen this on another forum but it didn't work for me)

3. Try to flash the BIOS from an USB stick (somehow, it doesn't want to access that stick at all)

Merci beaucoup pour l'aide que vous m'avez apportée.

(Thank you for the help)

With no BIOS or a corrupted one, you will be unable to boot the system.

Unfortunately, there is not way for you to reflash the BIOS yourself and you need to contact your local Acer service center for assistance.

    Bonjour Semicha,

Sorry mmike, in this case there will be nothing on the screen. Without a BIOS image installed on the system it's not goign to do much. Thanks for trying to help though! Smiley Happy

Semicha, you're right in your assumption that the BIOS is corrupt on the system. This means that all your computer really knows how to do right now is turn on and have lights. The BIOS essentially tells your computer how to be a computer. You may have corrupted yours, but there is still a way to recover it.

Before I start I'd like to say (to Tommy's credit), Acer will not help you with BIOS recoveries. There's just too much that can go wrong and it's not a process for those who are not technically inclined. It's just easier to have a unit repaired than to invest the time trying to teach people about advanced repairs on their units. So don't take it personal that Tommy suggested a repair, it's realy the only guaranteed method of fixing this issue.

Now you can't really do much more damage than has already been done. Even if by following the steps I provide you erase your bios again you'll still just be left in the same position as you're in right now. That being said keep in mind that by trying these steps you must accept the risks involved (however few).

What you'll need is a blank USB key formatted in FAT32. Download a copy of your BIOS from the Acer website.
Here's a link to the newest one, but it may not work. BIOS

The download comes in ZIP format so you'll need to extract the file. In the file you will see a BIOS ......... folder. In that folder you'll see DOS and Windows. Open DOS. Now look for a XXXXXX.FD file. FD files are the firmware image files for your bios.

Copy this file to the ROOT of a freshly formatted USB. This means put it right in the USB, not in any folders and COMPLETELY BY ITSELF. Plug the USB into the dead machine while it is powered off. Press and hold the FN and ESC keys. Keep them both held down and power on the unit. If your USB key has a light wait for it to start flashing. If not, count to 20 and then let go. Now just let your unit sit. It will eventually restart. If after the unit restarts you still don't see the "Acer Beyond Limits" POST screen then you should try downloading another copy of your system's bios from the Acer site. If it does, congratulations, you're back in business!

Bonne chance, et si jamais vous avez besoin de l'aide avec votre appareil n'hésiter pas de me demander!
(Good luck, and if ever you need help with your unit don't hesitat to ask!) <- For the English folk Smiley Happy
