Why is my second NVMe SSD not appearing in Windows on ConceptD 5 CN515-71P-78NA?

My laptop model is ConceptD 5 CN515-71P-78NA.

I installed second M.2 NVMe SSD on the laptop. But it does not show the second SSD on Windows Disk Management tool. The SSD is NTFS formatted. I tried several times in case I misfitted the ssd card. But no success.

I checked startup BIOS menu. But nothing I can change.

The second slot is clearly marked as NVMe. My SSD is Samsung 500GB NVMe. So I don't see why not work.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks in advance.

The ConceptD 5 CN515-71P has SSD1 slot boot drive of PCIe3x4 and SSD2 slot of PCIe/SATA Co-lay which means that its speed is max at PCIe3x2 but a PCIe3x4 will work also at max 1500MB/s read/write speeds as these M.2 SSD drives are backward compatible. If your Samsung drive is not faulty it should work 100% in this laptop, also clean the SSD2 slot with alcohol, as it could be dirty and could be the reason why the M.2 drive is not connecting. If doing all the above does not make the laptop recognize the SSD2 M.2 SSD drive then its either the Samsung drive that is faulty or the laptop SSD2 is faulty, and then take it to Acer Tech Support or a technician in your area to analyze the laptop where the fault is. Good luck and hope this helps.

Samsung SSD works on USB SSD enclosure. Then it should be wrong with SSD2 interface. I will clean it and retry. I bought the laptop about 3 to 4 years ago. So rust should have developed. Thanks for the help.

    Yes. You were correct!

I cleaned ssd pins and fitted again. Now it works.

    Thanks for the help again.

I need to correct that statement. I am running Samsung Magician on that exact laptop, with two 980 Pro M.2 gen 4 x 4, and they both drives are shown as running at a slot max of 3 x 4. The two slots are indeed identical, and the only provision for a SATA drive in this machine is the old SATA 2 1/2 form factor, where i have a WD 4TB SATA SSD installed.

Both M.2 drives are benchmarked at 3579 MB/s. Pretty darn fast!

The ConceptD CN515-71P has 2x PCIe 3 x4 M.2 slots NOT Gen 4 x4 slots that is why the two Samsung 980 Pro M.2 drives only work at max Gen 3 x4 lane speed.

This is the ConceptD CN515-71P block mobo diagram for the its drive specs.

Oh I know that they will not run at the gen 4 x4 speeds. What I meant is that, despite your diagram, both SSD slots operate identically with the two PCIe drives, they both run at 3 x4 and quite satisfactorily for my graphic design and CAD usage. Interestingly, a SATA M.2 would not work in that 2nd slot, as I physically tried to install a brand new one that I had on hand when I first got the laptop, before I ordered the proper drives. I don't know why there is a discrepancy there with my machine, but there is. For what it is, the benchmarks for this machine are pretty impressive. Nearly 5 years old, still blazing fast compared to some new ones with similar or better specs.

Your ConceptD 5 CN515-71P is one of Acers high end laptop range and that is why its still a very good platform today, but I can only quote you what this laptops service guide specs are below for the storage M.2 specs, as both M.2 slots are quoted below as a Co-lay type M.2 slot, meaning that they should work with a SATA M.2 SSD drive with a B&M end key and a PCIe 3x 4 M end key like specified below, as Storage 2: are specs for the 2.5" SATA 3 type drive.

Your ConceptD 5 CN515-71P-78NA must be a newer model than what the fist 2019/08/2 release models were and the last reviewed 2020/07/27 service guide which has the below specs. Acer must have upgraded the M.2 slots to only operate with a PCIe type drive, as the SATA M.2 drives were too slow for a high end product like the ConceptD laptops range of Acer.

below is a caption from the service guide for the ConceptD 5 CN515-71P which was last revied as at 2020/07/27, so your ConceptD 5 CN515-71P-78NA must be a later model than as at 2020/07/27 that is why the Co-lay feature was stopped.
