ACER TC-875-UR15 CD/DVD drive not seen by windows 10

I have an ACER TC-875-UR15 running updated win10. The other day when I tried to play a music cd WMP momentarily showed the disc and its contents and then switched to showing the library. I tried all the recommendation mictosoft's support sites show but the CD/DVD optical drive is now gone. It doesn't show under explorer nor under settings>system components. Control panel > Devices and Printers shows a yellow triangle next to the ACER icon. Troubleshoot shows Slimtype DVD A DA8AESH is disabled. Clicking on that returns Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem.

Is the drive dead or what?

    Check the ODD/DVD connections to the mainboard and ODD/DVD unit, first unplug all cables and clean all the pins of the ODD?DVD unit and the cable pins and then re plug all cables after they have been cleaned.

    See if the ODD/DVD unit is showing and playing, if not then the ODD/DVD unit is faulty and needs replacing with the oem Acer unit below. Good luck and hope this helps you out.

    It is a good idea to update all your drivers in Device Manager, as follows:-

    Also, Check for any corrosion and then plug back the connectors ( both the data and the power connectors) firmly. SATA  data connectors without clip can become loose easily.

    I did a windows update and the drive started to work. About halfway thru a disk it died. I bought the Acer because of their reputation but apparently I was wrong. I have a home built PC that's 16 years old and is still going strong with the original CD/DVD drive. My daughter has my previous homebrew from the mid-90s and it's still going strong. Pretty sad the "new" drive died after just four years. The installed drive was sounding like a hammer drill when it died.

    Please do check those cable connections to the drive. Those symptoms could easily just be a lose power cable. The optical drives are typically not part of new computers any more, especially with laptops that need to be thin and light. Drives used on those desktops that have optical drives are the thin drives that used to be used in laptops. They just aren't as reliable as the old 5.25" drives, do to the mechanical limitations needed to keep them thin. Luckily they are really pretty cheap to replace if yours has actually failed. Figure $20-40 depending on features…
