To resolve the "Chrome OS is damaged or missing" issue on your Chromebook 11 C740, follow these steps:

    1. Force Restart Your Chromebook

    • Press and hold the power button until the device shuts down. Wait a few seconds, then turn it back on. This can sometimes clear temporary glitches causing the error.

    2. Create Recovery Media

If a restart doesn't work, you need to create recovery media:

    • On another computer, install the Chromebook Recovery Utility from the Chrome Web Store.
    • Insert a USB drive (8GB minimum) into that computer.
    • Launch the utility, select your Chromebook model, and follow the prompts to create recovery media.

    3. Boot from Recovery Media

    • With your Chromebook powered off, insert the USB drive while on the "Chrome OS is missing or damaged" screen.
    • Press Esc + Refresh + Power to enter recovery mode. The Chromebook should detect the USB and begin reinstalling Chrome OS automatically.

    4. Additional Options

    If the above steps fail:

    • Try disconnecting the battery temporarily, then reconnecting it before powering on.
    • Consider entering Developer Mode by pressing Ctrl + D at startup, which may allow you to reset settings.

I'm sorry to hear that the previous steps didn’t resolve the issue. Let's try some additional troubleshooting methods to get your Chromebook working again.

    1. Check USB Drive and Recovery Image

    • Verify USB Drive: Ensure that the USB drive is functioning properly. Try using a different USB drive if available.
    • Use Official Recovery Image: Make sure you are using the official Chrome OS recovery image. Download it directly from the Chromebook Recovery Utility, as third-party images can sometimes cause issues.

    2. Use Different Boot Options

Sometimes, changing the boot order can help:

    1. Power off your Chromebook.
    2. Insert the USB recovery drive.
    3. Press Ctrl + L at startup to access the legacy boot menu.
    4. Select your USB drive from the list.

Likely the drive in your C740 has failed, so the recovery process can't fix it because it can't write a new image to it. The SG for your model says the drive is an mSATA module, but then later on it shows M.2 SATA drives instead. Best will be top open it up and physically look at it to determine which connector is used and the correct size. You had either a 16GB or 32GB stock, but can put a larger one in if you prefer. Once you have the new drive installed the recovery process will work again.
