Brand new Acer 27" 2560x1440, 180Hz Nitro IPS XV271U M3 is extremely dull in all modes and settings

I just recently bought this new monitor to replace a 27" Acer Nitro VG1 LED that suffered a crack in the display during a move. The new monitor is very very dull in color depth and the brightness is dismal. I know that IPS panels are dimmer by nature but I have a second display that is an Acer IPS SB220Q (a $90 monitor) sitting directly next to the brand new one and it is brighter and has better color in every single way.

I've spent hours trouble shooting reading forums and watching videos and I am at a loss.

What I've tried so far:

  • Tried 2 different power cables, 2 different display port cables, 2 HDMI cables, and a entirely separate PC (I tried every cable that came with the monitor itself before trying the cables I already had)
  • I tried turning HDR in the windows display settings on and off (the display is even more dull and almost resembles greyscale with it on)
  • Tried all the specific modes built into the monitor itself (HDR setting seems to look the best but still terribly dull)
  • Turned up the built in brightness on the monitor (specs say it will display over 400 NITS but is maybe displaying 80 at most, my 230 NIT monitor set at 75% is blowing it out of the water)
  • Tried disabling the device and uninstalling the device from the computer
  • Made sure me GeForce Drivers were up to date
  • Went into the Nvidia Control Panel and tested the monitor on Limited color range and Full color range
  • Did the windows HDR Calibration test (just slightly tweeking dull into higher contrast dull)
  • Ran dxdiag.exe to double checked that HDR was supported in the DirectX Diag Tool

In the Display information it says that my displays HDR certification is "Not Found" hence why I ran the dxdiag to double check. Weird but I don't think that's causing the issue as windows lets me enable HDR regardless even though it makes it look worse.

At this point I feel as though I've exhausted every option but I know there is no possible way this monitor is supposed to look like this. If there is something I haven't tried please comment because I'll be returning this display and going back to the LED display with a crack across it if I can't find a solution.

It seems you've exhausted many troubleshooting steps for your new monitor's poor brightness and color depth. Here are a few additional suggestions:

    1. Output Color Format: In the NVIDIA Control Panel, try changing the output color format from RGB to YCbCr444 or adjust the dynamic range to "Full" instead of "Limited" .
    2. Monitor Settings: Check if your monitor has a manual override for HDR settings, such as setting it to PQ/Rec. 2020 .
    3. Gamma and Contrast: Adjust gamma and contrast settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel or the monitor's built-in settings .
    4. Windows HDR Settings: Ensure HDR is correctly configured in Windows; toggling HDR off and on can sometimes reset the settings .

If these steps don't resolve the issue, consider returning the monitor.

Tried all these solutions. The problem is not with HDR, I could care less about it working at all. This new monitor and the old one have the exact same panel, led backlight and NITS the only thing this new monitor has that's different in terms of hardware is the HDR capability which I think is leading to the brightness issue. Even at 100% brightness this monitor is hard to see in a room with the light turned on while the old monitor with the same hardware and nits would've burned out my retinas at 100% brightness. I've triple checked the windows and monitor settings to make sure there is no power saving or blue light reduction settings turned on. Something about the windows setting is prohibiting this monitor from activating fully, that's why I was quick to blame HDR. I'm thinking the HDR settings, even while off, are making the SDR settings that it should revert to when HDR is not available disabled.

The Acer Nitro XV271U M3 monitor appears to be defective, as several users have reported similar issues with dull colors and low brightness. Despite trying various troubleshooting steps, the monitor's performance remains subpar compared to other IPS displays like the Acer SB220Q.Some key points:

    • The monitor's brightness is significantly lower than its 400 nit specification, with users reporting it looks more like 80 nits.
    • Enabling HDR makes the image look even duller and washed out.
    • The monitor's HDR certification is listed as "Not Found" in Windows.

Given the extent of the issues and the fact that the monitor is brand new, it is likely a defective unit and should be returned for a replacement or refund.

In the future, it may be worth considering alternative monitors from different brands or models with better reviews to avoid potential quality control issues. Carefully researching and comparing monitors before purchasing can help ensure a satisfactory experience.

Agreed. Sad as now I've got to go back to a cracked monitor for a few more weeks but that's what I get for being to quick on the trigger with the Prime Day Deals. Should've read more reviews before hand. It's unfortunate because there is going to be a lot of people with this same issue as Acer sold thousands of this exact model during the Amazon Prime Day for 40% off retail price.

It's rare for things like this to happen, but we should always check reviews on various platforms, such as Reddit, YouTube, and review sites, before making a purchase.
