We have unreliable wifi with our Acer Chromebook Spin 311 (R721T)

Has anyone reported wifi issues with Acer Chromebook Spin 311 (R721T) model N18Q12? The wifi is unsteady - flickers off and on OR shows it's strong but really has no wifi. This probably started happening more frequently since October 2022. Perhaps related to the Google updates but not sure. The classroom had a mix of touchscreen and non. Those with the touchscreen had the issues so I switched them to Acer Chromebook 712 [C871] and everything is fine. Can these Acer Spins be fixed? I tried a factory reset but to no avail.

Your system looks like it has a Qualcomm AC module in it, mounted in an M.2 slot. That means you could replace it with a different manufacturer's design as long as it has ChromeOS drivers. I've seen other people reporting WiFi issues with Qualcomm devices recently, but not enough of them to be a trend. Google might be mucking around with the drivers as they add support for newer chipsets, but it's tough to tell for sure. Are you up to date with OS releases? I think the CB713-1W models use an Intel WiFi card in their M.2 slot.

    Interesting.

We always make sure to check for updates especially when things start to act odd.

I have a call into Google

Yeah, like I said there have been a couple of users running various versions of the Qualcomm chipset that are having issues after an OS update, so I have to assume they're doing changes that need to be fixed....

I have exactly this issue with this model for the past two weeks now. Incredibly frustrating. Is there a suggested solution? I've tried a power wash, reset, checked for updates, have tried connecting to other wifis, etc. but the issue persists. Sometimes it says "error configuring network", other times it connects for a bit and then doesn't work (while continuing to report "strong" signal). Any help at all is appreciated. I am not that tech savvy though so if you can keep it in as simple terms as possible that would be lovely.

I have a spin 311 and 2 days ago the wifi started acting up. The chromeOS does not let me turn on the wifi. When I turned off the device via power button aka a real power down, and let it rest overnight, the next power on the wifi worked. After a few hours of sitting powered on but idle, the wifi was no longer working. After a 2nd attempt at the power cycle option the wifi failed to work. I did a POWERWASH of the chromeOS, and currently the chromebook is not connecting to the home wifi (which a dozen or so devices are using without issue). So, the question is, do the spin 311 Acer Chromebooks have an issue sometimes after a few years? like did my wifi chip burn out? how do I tell, without taking the device in for repair?

I looked in YouTube and found a video showing them opening the chromebook and re-seating the wifi card. My spin 311 is out of support, so likely not getting help from ACER. The reseating is working so far, I've got my fingers crossed that just re-plugging in the wifi card will get the job done.

It sounds like you might have had a bit of corrosion build up on the connector for the WLAN card. Maybe plan on reseating it every couple of years just to keep it cleaned…
