W700 screen burn/ghosting problem

Whenever there is a static white field/text on my screen it gets burned into the screen. The problem is worst around the edges of the screen. This is major annoying. I thought this kind of problem was a thing with ancient monitors from the past only.

Is this normal for this type of panel/monitor that the iconia has, or should I get my W700 repaired on the warranty?

It is interesting that the first time was not normal. Do not buy that **bleep** unless the service Acer replace my screen again, otherwise do not buy !!!!!!!!

That sucks! Your screen is exactly as mine.
I was planning on trying to get it replaced/repaired, but no point in that if the replacement screen will have the same problem. Smiley Sad

Yes, I have the same thing with my W700, but only noticed it recently.

It must be a common thing with this tablet.

Btw, do you all happen to have the core i5 version with 128gb ssd?

Perhaps it has to do with the heat produced by the processor.

It does not happen to me anymore, at least not as bad as the early weeks. I mean, after half a year of usage, the screen get normal. Some light ghosting might appear, but not as much as it was.

Every w700 burns.. it is production error..

I'm trying to revive discussion on this because, it may not be a production error.

It seems that some people have loaded linix and android on the W700 (dual boot, I imagine) and they don't have screen burn problems when they're not running windows. See the post below from this thread: http://community.acer.com/t5/Windows-Tablets/acer-w700-burn-in/td-p/28537/page/2

The screen burn is getting worse for me as well. Is it possible that it's a driver problem? The evidence below seems to indicate that. And we do know that Acer has been pretty bad with Windows drivers. (think bluetooth issue...)

     Cheers, Bill

Dear all, I have the same phenomenon when running the device in the windows 8 mode. I also installed android 4.2 on the W700 and noticed it was not apearing any more. Pherhaps it has something to do with the device drivers for windows 8. Curious to know if anyone else has the same experience.

    Hi eirlysbill,

the screen burn is getting really worse for me too...i already sent my tablet to acer, they changed the screen, it worked finefor something like 3 days and then started again..and now it's getting really worse.

I think I'm going to send it back in guaranty and then i will sell it as soon as i receive the new one and buy a surface pro or anything else than Acer, as I am really disapointed by this problem.

as it was working fine on the begining and becomes worse every day, I don't think this is something related to driver. moreover i have it in the uefi menu so windows is not loaded. I'm really sure it's just a problem with their screens.

    Cheers,

    Nicolas.

    ps:I've got the acer P3

Maybe an acer technician could help us?

Why do acer technicians answer to everyone except to us?
    Please, say something!

Moreover, I would like to know if the warranty is worldwide! indeed, I bought my computer in France but I'm now in China, could I send it back in warranty in China or do I have to send it back in France?
    Thanks!

I think i have this problem since i updated to windows 8.1

It look like more and more people are getting the same problem.

It should be very nice if Acer team reply to our messages !!!

Like many people i bought my Iconia few weeks ago and we can't tolerate that acer team just ignore our message !

You must give us some help !

Two days ago I just got a new W700-6827 i5-3337u, with the first boot into Windows 8 displaying this ghosting.

I'm not sure when, after some updates or the upgrade to Win 8.1, the ghosting disapeared and has not yet returned.

I that info helps those who are keen to pin a fault on Win 8.1.  As people don't have this with Linux or Android, it probably is a software issue, yet since it happened immediately on a factory stock device, Win 8.1 certainly ain't the cause.

Ok so if it's not a windows problem it sould be a driver problem ?

Acer should provide new driver update !

Is-it possible to get any help from acer technician ??

It look like Acer team still ignore our message.

It very frustrating and it make acer customer disappointed !

I start to regret my purchase !

I did some reading on this and heat can be a factor in creating ghosting on LCD panels. Interestingly enough, there is another issue, on the W700, that Acer isn't helping with either.

    http://community.acer.com/t5/Windows-Tablets/ICONIA-TAB-W700-Throttling-Turbo-Boost-issues/td-p/6873/page/52

This issue is called: throttling, and it is the cutting back on CPU speed once it hits a certain temperture, in order to keep the internals safe. The complaint is that Acer has set limits that are more conservative than the manuafactuers (Intel) specs. So... if Acer is worried about heat, and heat causes ghosting, then the problem could be in the hardware design of the tablet. Basically, the way the internals are cooled could be fundementally flawed, or not sufficent.

If this is true, then you are talking about a massive admission of fault by Acer, and would explain their silence/denials.

Combine this, with the fact that Acer is leaking money like a seive, and my guess is that help won't be on the way...

Someone hasn't been readingbthrough the threads completely. Man Wink The throttling issues were handled with the last BIOS update. The ghosting is an artifact of the screen brightness, white tends to stick around for a bit. Try setting your display to a lower level unless you are using the tablet outdoors.

The throttling is definitely not fixed and never has been. The device has a 10w clamp bit which kicks in after 10-20 seconds when under a full load. Doesn't make to much of a difference for the i3 (US model) but the i5 with turbo boost is basically pointless and performs the same as the i3.

The throttling should happen in relation to CPU and gpu temp and go up and down to give the best performance like it does in the surface pro.

Never experienced any screen burn myself though so can't really comment.

@billsey: that's a bit sarcastic... So easy to dis people you don't know and can't talk to face to face.

It's news to me that it's been fixed. Can you copy/paste the link, so I can see what you mean?

    Thanks

    @ Jason,

That's amazing that you haven't had any ghosting. What W700 do you have? I have the i5 version. Do you happen to be running a lower screen brightness, like billsey suggests? The ghosting on my screen has been getting progressively worse, and its a worrying sign.

Regarding throttling. I tried that patch that, "I think", you posted (somewhere?) about 3 weeks ago. And, I don't know if its coincidance but after loading that patch, I can now run F1 2013 (via Steam). Before, it was stuttering and pretty much worthless.

The problem is, that I did a few other things at the same time to try and make the game work. Like, thinning out an quite full SSD, and running defrag. So, I can't say for sure that the patch did the job, nor do I have the knowledge to even know if it was being throttled before, or still is. But, I could clearly see that others are still saying its not right yet.

    Cheers,

           Bill
